Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Monumento a la Virgen de la Paz, or the Monument to the Virgin of Peace, is found in Trujillo, a city in what nation?

Answer: Venezuela

Interestingly, while there is a Trujillo in Peru and a La Paz in Bolivia, the statue depicted is actually the tallest in the nation of Venezuela, reaching a height of nearly 47 metres and being, technically, taller than the Statue of Liberty. This did make it the tallest statue monument in the Americas upon its completion in 1983.

There's another statue of Mary nearby-- Virgen del Socavón in Oruro, Bolivia-- but it's only 45 metres tall and was only the third-tallest statue in the Americas upon its completion.
2. This statue can be found in the Museum of The History of Ukraine in World War II. What is its name?

Answer: The Motherland Monument

Built in the Ukranian capital, Kiev, in the late-1970s and early-1980s, The Motherland Monument was constructed out of stainless steel and features a functional gas flame that, at one time, was meant to burn endlessly. In the statue's other hand is a shield depicting the state emblem of the Soviet Union.

The museum beneath the statue contains a memorial to those who fell for Soviet-led Ukraine during the Second World War.
3. This Giant Buddha statue, the tallest pre-modern statue in the world, is found in what country?

Answer: China

The Leshan Giant Buddha is found in the Mount Emei Scenic Area in Sichuan Province. The cliff it's carved into isn't part of the sacred, UNESCO-protected Mount Emei, but it is found in the area resting on the Min and Dadu Rivers. Built in the eighth century (AD), it's 71 meters in height and visitors can walk down the nearby cliffs to its base. Until 1967, it was the tallest man-made statue standing in the modern world.
4. This 49-meter-tall Renaissance Monument can be found on what continent?

Answer: Africa

The significance here is that the image depicts the African Renaissance Monument standing in Dakar, Senegal. At 49 meters in height, it became the tallest statue on the continent upon its completion in 2010, beating out the 33 meter statue of Mangal Mahadev on the island nation of Mauritius.

The African Renaissance Monument, built fifty years after the nation gained independence from France, can be found on one of the two hills at Deux Mamelles; on the other hill is a lighthouse, Phare des Mamelles, which is at the westernmost point of Africa.
5. Considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, the statue depicted is the tallest in South America.

Answer: False

While El Cristo Redentor is perhaps the most famous statue in South America, the statue of Nossa Senhora de Fátima in Crato, Brazil became the tallest statue on the continent in 2016, topping off at 45 meters. Christ the Redeemer, standing atop Corcovado Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, only reaches a height of 30 meters. Weirdly, there's a larger statue of Christ in South America-- Cristo de la Concordia in Cochabamba, Bolivia, built in 1994, stands at about 40 meters in height.
6. This religious statue found in Hong Kong is known by what name?

Answer: Tian Tan Buddha

This bronze statue tops off at 34 meters in height as it sits atop Lantau Island near Po Lin Monastery. While it's not the largest Buddha statue in the world, it is one of the most-visited, partly because it's so close to the highly-populated city of Hong Kong and can be seen from there in clear weather conditions.

The highland village of Ngong Ping, where the statue was built, is also home to the nearby Lantau Peak, one of the tallest mountains in the region.
7. This statue found on an island in New York City, was given to the United States by France in the 19th century. It's the Statue of...what?

Answer: Liberty

Built by Eiffel Tower creator Gustave Eiffel, the Statue of Liberty was eventually opened to the public on Liberty Island in 1886. To the top of the torch, the statue is 46 meters in height, and while visitors used to be able to ascend to the balcony on the torch, the highest point reachable inevitably became the interior of the crown.

It is, of course, a symbol of freedom for the United States and its torch has been featured on the U.S. $10 bill.
8. This weird statue is known as Guerrero Chimalli. Where in the world can it be visited?

Answer: Mexico

Guerrero Chimalli is found in the city of Chimalhuacán, part of the greater Mexico City area, and at 50 metres in height (and standing on a 10 metre-tall pedestal, it became the tallest sculpture in the Americas in 2014. Made of copper, the statue depicts a figure wielding a mace and a shield.

At the time of its creation it cost thirty-four million pesos to erect, and with Chimalhuacán having a high rate of poverty, the statue was met with some criticism. A Chīmalli was a type of shield wielded by indigenous Mexican people.
9. Found in Volgograd, Russia, the statue The Motherland Calls is meant to commemorate the soldiers who fought for which of these?

Answer: The Battle of Stalingrad

Stalingrad and Volgograd are the same city; the location had a name change in 1961. That said, The Motherland Calls, built on Mamayev Kurgan, was constructed to honour those who fell there in World War II during what many say was the largest battle of the Soviet Front.

More than a million Russians fell in battle there, though the city was won by the Soviets when the Nazis surrendered. To the tip of the sword, the statue reaches 85 metres in the air. It was the tallest statue int he world when it was completed.

The Battle of Stalingrad took place in between August 1942 and February 1943. The statue was finished in 1967.
10. Found in Świebodzin, Poland, this art deco statue depicts what religious figure?

Answer: Jesus Christ

This statue, Christ the King, was erected in Western Poland in 2010 and reaches a height of 33 metres, making it a bit taller than Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (despite that one being better-known). Because of this, it became the tallest Jesus statue on the globe at the time of its completion.

This one also happened to be the tallest statue in Poland upon creation. The town of Świebodzin is actually pretty close to Berlin; it's about a third of the distance to get to there instead of Warsaw.
