Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which Queen is standing outside the front of St Paul's Cathedral?

Answer: Queen Anne

The statue now standing is actually a replica of an earlier one which was originally erected in 1712.
2. How much does the statue of the Roman horse tamer in Hyde Park weigh (it is also known as the Achilles Statue)?

Answer: 33 tons

The enormous cost of the statue was funded by 'the women of England' in tribute to the Duke of Wellington. Those who know the statue will understand why the genteel ladies present at the unveiling of this rather exposed male figure, were scandalised when they first saw it!
3. What is notable about the statue of Queen Victoria located at the National Gallery annex at Carlton House Terrace?

Answer: She has a chipped nose

The statue is located under the porchway and was by Sir Thomas Brock.
4. Where is the Peter Pan statue?

Answer: Kensington Gardens

The statue was commissioned by Barrie himself and Peter Pan was modelled on Nina Boucicault who played the first Peter Pan in the London stage production of the story.
5. Where can you find Beethoven, Lawes, Purcell, Tallis, Haydn, Gibbons, Mozart, Mendelssohn and Weber socialising and reading together?

Answer: On the Albert Memorial

The frieze around the base of the Memorial contains many other figures in addition to the group of composers.
6. What is Sir Joshua Reynolds doing in the statue outside Burlington House?

Answer: Painting

Burlington House is the home of the Royal Academy of Arts.
7. To whom is the large memorial at the front of Buckingham Palace dedicated?

Answer: Queen Victoria

The Memorial (by Sir Thomas Brock again) was designed together with the Mall as an entire grand spectacle.
8. Where is the only cross-eyed statue in London?

Answer: Fetter Lane

The statue is of John Wilkes whose campaign for press freedom got him imprisoned in the Tower of London (released in 1763). He was also a member of the Hellfire Club.
9. Where would you go to meet the statue of Charlie Chaplin?

Answer: Leicester Square

The statue was unveiled in 1981.
10. Of what is the lion on the south side of Westminster Bridge made?

Answer: Terracotta

The specific name for the material is Coade Stone. It is a special form of terracotta which is exceptionally hard wearing. Unfortunately, the secret of its manufacture was lost when the factory closed down.
11. What is Sir Ernest Shackleton wearing in his statue located on the Royal Geographic Society building?

Answer: Coat, shoes and woolly hat

And very warm he looks too!

13. Where can you find a statue of the suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst?

Answer: Victoria Tower Gardens, near Parliament

Victoria Tower Gardens are located to the west of the Houses of Parliament and are named after the Victoria Tower. This tower is clearly visible as part of the Parliament buildings (it is not the one containing Big Ben).
14. What is notable about the statue of Oliver Cromwell, standing outside the Houses of Parliament?

Answer: His spurs are upside down

Cromwell is depicted standing (without a horse, but with the spurs) holding a bible and a sword.
15. Where was a new statue of Queen Elizabeth II located in 1977, the year of her Silver Jubilee?

Answer: There was no such statue

In the UK, the convention is almost always never to sculpt statues of living monarchs. Although a few were made of Elizabeth II during her lifetime, none were in 1977.
