1. Vanderbilt University
Answer: Tennessee
Wealthy shipping businessman Cornelius Vanderbilt is the namesake of this Nashville-based university. He donated one million dollars to start the school in hopes of healing some of the wounds left over from the Civil War. It was founded in 1873.
2. Wake Forest University
Answer: North Carolina
Wake Forest was founded in 1834 as a Baptist school. It began in the town of Wake Forest located just north of Raleigh, North Carolina. After generous donations from the Reynolds family (who made their fortune in tobacco) the school, in 1946, agreed to move to Winston-Salem NC. The move was completed ten years later.
3. Duke University

Duke was founded in Randolph County, North Carolina, in 1838 by a society made up of Methodists and Quakers. Once known as Trinity College, the school's name was change to Duke in honor of Washington Duke, the patriarch of a family who made its fortune in tobacco.
In 1892, the school moved to donated land in Durham. Washington Duke made numerous generous donations to the school with the stipulation that women could enroll in the school and receive the same education as their male counterparts.
4. Clemson University

Clemson University is located in hills of southwestern South Carolina in the town of Clemson. In 1889, it was founded as a public university when Thomas Clemson left much of his estate to help start a college that was to be modelled after Mississippi State University.
His father-in-law was John C Calhoun (Seventh Vice-President of the US) and much of his fortune was left to him by his wife.
5. Tulane University

Located in New Orleans, Louisiana, Tulane was founded as a medical school by seven doctors in 1834. Thirteen years later the state took over the school naming it the University of Louisiana. The school had financial troubles after the Civil War. After a large land donation by merchant Paul Tulane, the state relinquished its control and allowed the school to continue as a private university.
Its main campus is located in uptown New Orleans.
6. Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, was founded in 1930 as a branch of the college of William and Mary. It derives its name from one of Virginia's state nicknames. The commonwealth is known as "The Old Dominion State", a title bestowed up on it by King Charles II for the state's loyalty to the king during the English Civil War.
In 1961, the athletic teams became known as the "Monarchs" in recognition of the role the English Crown had in its founding and the state's history.
7. Austin Peay State University

Austin Peay is located in Clarksville, Tennessee. It was founded as Austin Peay Normal School in 1927, being named for the governor of Tennessee who was serving his third term that year. The school became known as Austin Peay State University in 1943. As an additional honor to Governor Peay the athletic teams play under the nickname of "the governors".
8. The Citadel

Officially called the Military College of South Carolina, the public school is located in Charleston, South Carolina. The Citadel was founded in 1842 to protect white Charlestonians against the threat of slave uprisings. The school has transformed over the years accepting both African-American and female cadets.
9. College of William and Mary

William and Mary, located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1693, making it the second oldest school of higher learning in the USA. It was endorsed by King William III and Queen Mary II and was a "royal" school until the American Revolution. After the revolution the school broke ties with England and remained a private college until the Civil War.
After the Civil War, it became a state school. Sixteen members of the Continental Congress, four signers of the Declaration of Independence, and three US presidents (Jefferson, Monroe and Tyler) studied at the school.
10. Grambling State University

Grambling State University was founded by a group of African-American farmers who had a desire to educate other African-Americans. With the help of people like Booker T Washington, the school opened in 1901 as the Colored Industrial and Agriculture School.
After other name changes it became known as Grambling State University in 1946. It is named for the town in which the school is located. Because of its rich history, many buildings on the campus were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010.
