Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The R.M.S. Lusitania belonged to which shipping line?

Answer: Cunard

The large majority of ships sailing for the Cunard line had names ending in "ia" (e.g. Franconia, Pannonia, Carpathia, Mauretania, etc.). They did, however, have some ships with names that didn't have that ending, such as Queen Elizabeth and Queen Mary.
2. What caused the Lusitania to sink?

Answer: A torpedo from a German U-boat

The Lusitania sank remarkably quickly - in about 18 minutes. The speed of the sinking accounts for the large number of casualties.
3. On which date did the sinking of the Lusitania take place?

Answer: May 7th, 1915

As a result of the sinking there was a strong shift of support by US citizens for the people of Britain and against Germany.
4. Approximately how many people died as a result of the Lusitania sinking?

Answer: 1200

Of the 1198 people who died, 128 were United States citizens.
5. Following the sinking of the Lusitania, which of the following occurred?

Answer: All of these

Although Germany stopped attacking neutral and passenger ships around Britain for nearly two years it maintained that the Lusitania was a legitimate target as it was carrying war materials.
6. The Imperial German Embassy in Washington D.C., issue written warnings to passengers saying that to travel to England was to do so at their own risk.

Answer: True

Germany made great efforts to make people aware of the danger of traveling on ships (particularly British ships) going anywhere near the United Kingdom. Some of the Lusitania survivors were able to pull soggy notices giving this warning from their pockets after being rescued.
7. As it was sunk, the Lusitania was traveling from New York to Plymouth.

Answer: False

The Lusitania was actually traveling from New York to Liverpool, the home of the Cunard line.
8. Which island was the Lusitania approaching, as it was sunk?

Answer: Ireland

During World War One, German U-boats used to wait for ships off the coast of Ireland. Ireland's location made it easy to hunt ships as the ships would come to the U-boats rather than having to hunt for them in the wide Atlantic Ocean. Many British and allied ships were sunk off the Irish coast or as they approached Ireland.
9. Which of the following appeared as headlines in US or British newspapers?

Answer: All of these

"German Pirates Sink the Lusitania" appeared in the 'Daily Sketch'. "A Deed For Which A Hun Would Blush..." appeared in the New York 'Nation'. "What Women And Children Endured When Tirpitz's Murderers Send The Lusitania To Her Doom" appeared in the 'Daily Mirror'.
10. Who was the First Lord of the Admiralty at the time of the Lusitania's sinking?

Answer: Winston Churchill

Winston Churchill had a bad time as First Lord of the Admiralty. As well as receiving much blame for the sinking of the Lusitania, he was also held responsible for the failure of the Galipoli Campaign against the Turks. He resigned from the position due to public dissatisfaction with his performance.
