Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which 'Big' fruit can be found in Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, Australia, and features a 45-acre amusement park?

Answer: The Big Banana

The grounds of Coffs Harbour's Big Banana amusement park are located amongst a banana plantation, making the choice of banana as this particular 'Big' fruit quite apropos. The Big Banana is one of Australia's first Big Things, having been built in 1964.

A large walk-through banana delights visitors, and the theme park features heaps of water slides, a toboggan ride, and an ice skating rink. Tours of the banana plantation are available at the park. The Big Banana was one of five Big Things commemorated in a set of postage stamps released by Australia Post in 2007.
2. The Big Orange, designed by architect John Twopenny, can be found near the town of Berri in which Australian state's Riverland?

Answer: South Australia

The Riverland is a region of South Australia where the Murray River flows into the state from Victoria and New South Wales. Berri, a town in this region, is 238 km from South Australia's capital city of Adelaide. The Big Orange in Berri was originally constructed in 1980.

Its height is 15 meters, and it has a diameter of 12 meters. Materials used to construct the Big Orange include fiberglass and a steel frame, and the overall mass of the citrus structure is around 85 tonnes. Three men responsible for conceiving of the Big Orange, Bronte Coombe, Vern Chubb and David Marshall, invested $145,000 in the 1970s to ensure the structure could be completed.
3. The Big Pineapple in Queensland is located on Australia's East Coast.

Answer: True

Queensland is Australia's most northeastern state, and Nambour is in the Sunshine Coast Region, bordering the Coral Sea on Australia's East Coast. The Big Pineapple is 16 meters high. It was first opened in August, 1971, and added to the Queensland Heritage Register in March, 2009. Since 2013, the Big Pineapple has been the site of the Big Pineapple Music Festival.

The Big Pineapple is a hollow structure, and the shell of the main body of it is made of fiberglass supported by a steel frame.
4. Located at Tropical Fruit World in Duranbah, NSW, is which 'Big' fruit, which contains more potassium than a banana?

Answer: Avocado

While a mango has slightly more potassium (564 mg) than a banana (422 mg), it is the avocado, with the most potassium (708 mg) of these four fruits, that adorns Duranbah's Tropical Fruit World. Tropical Fruit World was previously called Avocado Adventureland, hence the instalment of the Big Avocado at this location. Duranbah has avocado orchards, and avocado ice cream and avocado milkshakes can be enjoyed there.
5. When the Big Prawn was originally constructed at West Ballina, NSW, it lacked which caudal feature?

Answer: A tail

When it was created in 1989, the Big Prawn was missing a tail. It was originally placed atop a service station. South Australian sculptor James Martin designed the Big Prawn. The formidable crustacean is 9 meters tall, and had a spiral staircase when it was first built in which one could ascend to the head of the prawn.
6. The Big Pie can be enjoyed at which Australian state's Gold Coast, in the city's suburb of Yatala?

Answer: Queensland

The Yatala Pie Shop opened in 1914. The shop was originally located on Pacific Highway, but it was relocated when the Pacific Highway was replaced by the Pacific Motorway which didn't allow roadside businesses. The Big Pie was built in the 1970s. It has a 4.5-meter diameter, and rests atop a 10-meter pole.
7. The Big Lobster at Rosetown, Southern Australia, is known locally by which alliterative name that it shares with a recurring character in "SpongeBob SquarePants"?

Answer: Larry the Lobster

The Big Lobster is also known as Larry the Lobster, and stands an impressive 17 meters tall. The lobster is made of steel and fiberglass. It opened in December 1979, intending to attract business to the restaurant and visitor center at its location. The Big Lobster was designed and built by Paul Kelly, who had already built the Big Scotsman in Adelaide.
8. The Big Oyster, found in Ceduna, South Australia, was originally created for Ceduna's annual Oysterfest as which of the following?

Answer: A float

The Big Oyster was created in 1992 by Leon Veerhuis, and it was designed to be used as a float in the Oysterfest parade. It was utilized in this fashion until 1994, when the Big Oyster shucked the parading existence to rest, stationary, off of Eyre Highway. The Big Pelican, located in Loxton, South Australia, was also originally designed to be used as a float.
9. Which fruit does the 2018-constructed Big Melon in Chinchilla, Queensland, resemble?

Answer: Watermelon

The 8-meter long watermelon was installed next to Chinchilla's information centre in November of 2018 after the town won a national competition to create Australia's 'Next Big Thing'. Wotif, a web-based hotel reservation company, sponsored the competition that led to the Big Melon being Australia's 'Next Big Thing'. In this competition, the Big Melon beat out three other finalists: the Big Peanut in Kingaroy, the Big Kilt in Glen Innes, and the Big Tulip in Mittagong.

Chinchilla is known as the 'Melon Capital of Australia', and hosts a Melon Festival every other year. 25% of Australia's melons are produced in Chinchilla.
10. Built in 1998, the Giant Mushroom can be found at Belconnen Fresh Food Markets in Canberra, Australia. The mycological behemoth was officially launched by the head of government of the Australian Capital Territory, who is known by what title?

Answer: Chief Minister

The Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory performs the same functions at the state level as the Prime Minister of Australia does at the national level. In 1998, it was Kate Carnell in that role who was responsible for the launching of the Giant Mushroom. A children's playground is featured beneath the 8-meter by 4-meter Giant Mushroom.
