Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. United Kingdom: The Union Flag (or Union Jack) is a combination of more than one flag. Which of the following describes the countries whose flags are represented?

Answer: Scotland, England, Northern Ireland

In 1606, the first Union Flag combined the white on blue saltire of St. Andrew and the red on white cross of St. George. A saltire to represent Ireland (red on white) was added when Ireland joined the union. Eire, the Republic of Ireland, has since become independent and is therefore no longer represented by the red cross.
2. China: The Chinese flag has five yellow stars on it. The four smaller ones all represent groups of people to be found within Chinese society. Which of these is NOT one of these groups?

Answer: The army

The four smaller stars represent the peasants, workers, petty bourgeois and any capitalists sympathetic to the Communists. The army is, perhaps surprisingly, not represented although it is a fairly important part of Chinese society.
3. Finland: What do the blue and white colours used on the Finnish flag represent?

Answer: Lakes, sky and snow

The blue on the Finnish flag specifically represents the lakes of the country which make up an enormous part of the interior and the sky. The white background is for the snow.
4. United States of America: When was the last time the flag of the US was altered?

Answer: In 1959 when Hawaii joined the Union

Hawaii was the last state to be added to the Union, in August 1959. The fiftieth star was added to show it was a member. It was the 28th time the flag had changed. Alaska also became a state in 1959, but earlier in the year (January). Puerto Rico, despite being strongly influenced by America, is not one of the fifty States.

Instead it is a dependent territory which only flies its flag alongside that of the United States.
5. Peru: The colours on Peru's flag are red and white because they are considered the colours of liberty. What is the traditional explanation regarding how these colours were chosen?

Answer: A flock of red and white birds flew over the army during their fight for freedom

The Peruvian people's fight to free themselves from Spanish rule was hard but it is said that when a General saw some flamingos fly overhead, he considered it to be a good omen and declared those colours the colours of liberty.
6. The flag of which country contains orange to represent its richness in copper deposits in ancient times?

Answer: Cyprus

Cyprus deliberately avoided using blue or red, because they represent Greece and Turkey respectively. These two countries are involved in an ongoing battle for the country, which is split down the middle with a line dividing the Greek and Turkish sectors.
7. Which nation avoided using blue or red on its national flag because these are the colours of two countries involved in a dispute over land in this nation?

Answer: Cyprus

It's Cyprus again. Using the colours of Turkey or Greece would only cause tension.
8. Which of these countries' flags does NOT have any writing on it at all?

Answer: Colombia

The Brazilian flag says 'Ordem e Progresso' ('Order and Progress'), the flag of Guam has the name of the island written on it, and the Iranian flag has 'Allah-o-Akbar' (God is Great) written on it 22 times.
9. How many stars are there in total on the flags of Honduras, Morocco, and Australia?

Answer: 12

The flag of Honduras has five stars on it, the Australian has six. The Moroccan flag has one green star on a red background.
10. What is the name of the type of tree to be found on the flag of Lebanon?

Answer: Cedar

The cedar tree has been the symbol of Lebanon since Biblical times. The tree represents happiness and prosperity for the country.
11. Which Eastern European country's flag uses the same two main colours on its flag as Portugal, and has a traditional design on the left hand side?

Answer: Belarus

The flag of Belarus has two horizontal stripes: one, thicker stripe is red and underneath it is a narrower green band. The red symbolises Belarus's political tendencies.
12. Which of these countries uses different colours on its flag from the rest?

Answer: Estonia

Estonia uses blue, white and black on its flag while the others use red and not black.
13. Which country's flag has a representation of itself showing its position in relation to two of the world's oceans (on both of which it has a coast)?

Answer: Nicaragua

Nicaragua (blue and white horizontal stripes) has a sign in the centre showing itself (represented by five peaks) between two seas.
14. On which of these countries' flags is green present?

Answer: Cyprus

It's Cyprus again. On the Cypriot flag there are two green, crossed olive branches representing peace.
15. Not counting any pictures in the middle of flags, how many different colours are used in the flags of all of the countries of Central America on the mainland (from Mexico to Panama inclusive)?

Answer: 4

All of the countries have red, white and blue, except for Mexico which uses red, white and green. That makes four colours in the flags of Mexico, Belize, Honduras, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Panama.
