Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Les maisons empèchent...

Answer: de voir la ville

Can be translated as 'The houses prevent you from seeing the city'. Like the famous saying 'I can't see the forest for the trees'. It means that you can't see something which should be really obvious.
2. Chassez-le par la porte,...

Answer: il entrera par la fenêtre

'Chase him out of the door, he will enter through the window'. It means you can't keep your problems (or whatever) from your door, because they will catch up with you anyways.
3. On ne fait pas d'omelette...

Answer: sans casser des oeufs

'You don't make omelet without cracking eggs', meaning that you can't do something huge without thinking of the little things your enterprises are based upon.
4. Qui vivra...

Answer: verra

'(The one) who will live will see'. You can understand things later in life even though you have no idea about their meaning now. It is an equivalent of the English "Time will tell".
5. La montagne...

Answer: a enfanté une souris

'The mountain has borne a mouse'. This proverb also exists in German, only that there the mountain circles around before it bears the mouse ('Der Berg drehte sich im Kreis und gebar ein Mäuschen')... it's complete nonsense, and that's exactly what it means. Basically 'much ado about nothing'.
6. Chacun a son...

Answer: gout

'Everyone to their taste'.
7. L'appétit vient...

Answer: en mangeant

'The appetite comes when you eat', meaning that you should try a thing you don't like - maybe you'll start liking it.
8. Tout comprendre c'est...

Answer: tout pardonner

'Understanding everything is forgiving everything'.
9. C'est la robe...

Answer: qu'on salue

'It's the clothing you greet', meaning that you judge people by their looks.
10. Tirer les marrons...

Answer: du feu

'Taking the chestnuts out of the {fire';} the English saying is 'to be made a cat's-paw (by a person)' (dictionary definition). It means that you do someone else's dirty work.
