6. Ironically enough, Muslim mosques are meant to mimic the design of what great construct that was originally a Christian church?

Answer: Hagia Sophia

The Hagia Sophia was originally a Christian church built in the 500s by the Roman emperor Justinian. It remained the world's largest enclosed space for centuries and its city, Byzantium, remained standing for nearly a thousand years even as its empire slowly deteriorated.

In 1453, the Ottoman emperor Mehmed made a name for himself by breaking the large walls of the city, and took the Hagia Sophia in the name of Islam. The domed structure served as a template for mosques afterwards. The Hagia Sophia was turned into a museum under modern day Turkey in 1935, but in 2020 plans were made to turn it back into a mosque.

This decision became a point of contention and drew condemnation from organizations such as UNESCO and the World Council of Churches.
