George was only 14 when this opportunity was offered to him. Fortunately, for the United States, his mother said no. History might well have been quite different if he had pursued a Royal Navy career.

Governor Dinwiddie appointed George as one of four adjutants to replace George's brother, Lawrence, who had passed away.

Answer: Surveyor

By the age of 15, George became quite skillful with his father's surveying equipment. In February of 1748, he accepted an invitation from Lord Fairfax to explore the northwest region of Virginia. He received a surveyor's commission from the College of William and Mary.
