Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Candy canes represent the staff used by Saint Nicholas.

Answer: False

Candy canes represent the Christian faith at Christmas. The cane shape is formed into the letter J for Jesus.
2. What is a Buche de Noel?

Answer: a log shaped dessert

A Buche de Noel is a cake. In the form of the holiday Yule log, it is rolled like a jelly roll with a creamy or fruity filling, and decorated with chocolate frosting and meringue shapes to represent bark and mushrooms.
3. Turkey was the main dish for the first Thanksgiving.

Answer: False

Turkey may or may not have been served. The Pilgrims and their guests ate mostly venison and oysters for their meat along with berries, nuts, maize, and whatever vegetables they were able to grow that year.
4. The traditional dessert for Mardi Gras is called what?

Answer: King Cake

A King Cake is a high cake made with yeast. It is served decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of purple and gold.
5. The original traditional food for Halloween is pumpkin pie.

Answer: False

Although enjoyed, Halloween is not actually a legal holiday. The closest traditional foods might be anything sweet - thus the giving out of candy. It was meant to originally appease the evil spirits and demons that were thought to roam the Earth around All Souls Day, and/or the Pagan Samhain.
6. It is a modern tradition in some places to break and eat what on New Year's Eve?

Answer: a peppermint pig

The peppermint pig started in Saratoga, NY. It is made of a hard, pink, peppermint flavored candy. Once broken, each person eats a piece to insure good fortune for the coming year.
7. What is the traditional meat served at Easter?

Answer: lamb

Lamb represents both Jesus, the Lamb of God, and the rebirth of life to the earth in spring.
8. Cranberries must be picked from their bushes before fully ripening so they remain firm.

Answer: False

Cranberries are not picked. When they are fully ripe and red, the fields are flooded with water. The cranberries float and they are scooped up.
9. In Easter bread, it is traditional to insert what?

Answer: whole hardboiled eggs with their shells

Hard boiled eggs are also representative of Jesus' rising from the dead, and of the rebirth of life to the Earth. I don't know why we color them. Perhaps someone out there can tell me.
10. From what type of fruit is the traditional pie for Washington's Birthday made?

Answer: Cherry

Everyone has heard the story of a young George Washington cutting down the cherry tree. He couldn't tell a lie, but I wonder why he cut it down. (This is actually a tall tale passed down through the generations. It never happened.)
