Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This country was once a territory of Great Britain, and was made up of thirteen individual colonies. In 1776, colonists declared independence from Great Britain, by signing a document declaring the reasons why they were breaking away. Which country's independence day is celebrated on July 4?

Answer: United States

During the American Revolution, the United States declared independence from Britain on July 4, 1776, when they signed the Declaration of Independence. This document stated the reasons why the colonies had decided to dissolve all political ties with Britain and form their own government. John Adams (one of the United States founding fathers), made a prophecy that our Independence day should be a memorial to that great event, and "should be celebrated with fireworks and parades".

It is similar to our celebrations today, except John Adams made a mistake.

He thought July 2, 1776 would be our independence day, because it was when we decided to declare independence. We did not actually sign the document until July 4, 1776.
2. France helped the United States in their fight for independence, but within a few years, France had their own revolution that abolished their monarchy, and made France a new Republic. Which holiday celebrates France's independence on July 14?

Answer: Bastille Day

Bastille day is France's national holiday, that celebrates their independence. Unlike the United States, they do not celebrate the days they created documents that declared their independence. Instead they celebrate the first battle-like event in the French Revolution---the storming of the Bastille---as their independence day! In fact the Eiffel tower was originally built to celebrate Bastille Day's centennial anniversary!
3. Venezuela was one of the first Spanish colonies to oppose Spanish rule and seek independence. In 1810, the town council rebelled against Spanish authorities and formed their own small government, the Junta, to rule in favor of the king. The Junta withdrew their loyalty to the king and formally declared independence on July 5, 1811.

Answer: True

Venezuela declared independence from Spain on July 5, 1811, but their success lasted only temporary. The Spanish reinforced their power with their military. The leader of the revolutionary forces, Francisco de Miranda, tried to settle peace with the Spanish forces, but was taken prisoner and ended up dying in Spain.

The fight for independence would continue until the Battle of Carabobo in 1821, which would eventually lead to independence with Venezuela being a part of the Republic of Gran Columbia. Venezuela succeeded from the union in 1829, and became their own country with Caracas as the nation's capital.

The independence movement for India was sparked again in 1929, when Mahatma Gandhi launched a civil disobedience movement which defied all orders passed by the British government.

In 1942, the "Quit India" movement was introduced calling for a non-violent but united struggle for independence. However before it could take effect, all the major leaders were arrested. On August 15, 1947, India gained independence but was partitioned, creating the separate country of Pakistan.
