"Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport" is not only the busiest airport in Australia but is also the world's oldest continually-operated commercial and international airport. In 1936 the Sydney Airport was renamed in honour of Sir Charles Kingsford Smith (1897-1935) who was a pioneering Australian aviator.

In 1928 he became the person to achieve the trans-Pacific flight east and west between the USA and Australia. During his career he also set records for flying from Australia to England.

From 1939-1992 the international airport serving Munich was the Munich-Riem Airport. The present Munich International Airport commenced operating on May 17, 1992. The airport was named after Franz Josef Strauss (1915-1988) who was a German politician and a former President of the state of Bavaria. The full name of the airport is "Flughafen München Franz Josef Strauss".
3. Lester B. Pearson

Pearson (1897-1972) was Toronto-born and was a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate (1957) and was the 14th Canadian Prime Minister (1963-1968).

The airport was named in his honour in 1984.

He was also an interim President of Mexico in 1855.

The airport is named after two Atlanta mayors and politicians Maynard Jackson (1938-2003) and William Hartsfield (1890-1971). The was changed in 2003 from "Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport to the current name.
6. O.R.Tambo

The airport was originally named in 1952 as "Jan Smuts International Airport" after a former Prime Minister. Then in 1994 renamed "Johannesburg International Airport" and in 2006 renamed "O. R. Tambo International Airport"
after Oliver Tambo, a former President of the African National Congress (ANC). Oliver Reginald Tambo (1917-1993) was an anti-apartheid politician and revolutionary and was President of the ANC from 1967-1991.

The renaming of the airport came after the death of Adolfo Suárez (1932-2014) who was the first democratically elected Prime Minister (1976-1981) after the dictatorship of Francisco Franco. Suárez played a key role in the transition of the country from dictatorship to democracy.

He was a composer, pianist, conductor, music teacher, organist, arranger and author.
