Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What book did Jackie help Jack write during his convalescence from back surgeries in 1955?

Answer: Profiles In Courage

Jack underwent several spinal operations over two years, nearly dying and was rarely in the Senate. During his convalescence in 1956, he published "Profiles in Courage", a book describing eight instances in which U.S. Senators risked their careers by standing by their personal beliefs.

He dedicated it to Jackie, whom helped him, not only with the writing, but also the publishing of the book.
2. How did Jack first get noticed on a more national scale as a politician?

Answer: He ran for and lost the vice presidential nomination of his party.

Though his wit and charm took him far, it was when Jack ran for and lost the vice presidential nomination for the Democratic Party in 1956, that got him noticed on a National scale. He did win a second Senate term, and was witty and charming and that got people's attention.

He did not, however, lead the passing of important legislation. He was well-known for turning doing nothing into a Senate art form, mainly because his illnesses kept him away.
3. What is the name of the stillborn daughter that Jackie gave birth to after the Democratic National Convention in 1956?

Answer: Arabella

Arabella Kennedy was stillborn to Jackie in 1956. The stillbirth, according to the doctor, was a result of stress from the Democratic National Convention. Jack and Teddy had taken a cruise to relax after the convention. The boat was incommunicado for nearly 5 days after the stillbirth.

The boat's radio had been shut off so that Jack could have a good time with the girls he and Teddy had brought on board. When Jack finally got the news, he was going to stay on the cruise. A staffer told him that if he ever wanted to be President of the United States he needed to return to his suffering wife.

It is said by people that knew them, and by Kennedy scholars, that Jack and Jackie's marriage was never quite the same after this incident.
4. Jack ran against Vice President Richard Milhouse Nixon in the election of 1960.

Answer: True

Jack was nervous about running against Republican former Vice President Richard Milhouse Nixon in 1960, simply because Eisenhower had been a very popular President. However, Jack's handlers felt that Jack's good looks and beautiful wife would more than make up for it.
5. Why did Jackie not accompany her husband to the Democratic National Convention of 1960?

Answer: She was pregnant and feared miscarriage or premature birth.

Jack and Jackie argued quite a bit about her not attending the convention in 1960, but her panic at the thought of her new baby being stillborn prompted Jackie not to give in to Jack's pleas and she stayed home.
6. What is believed by historians to have swayed the voters to Jack?

Answer: The televised presidential debates.

The presidential debates are cited as the moment Jack went from being a pretty boy with a nice face and a way with words to presidential. Handsome Jack made the ill (he had the flu) and plain Nixon pale in comparison to him.
7. What was Jackie's main contribution as First Lady?

Answer: She restored the White House.

When Jack and Jackie moved into the White House, it was a mess. Many of the most important gifts to the White House had been stored away or sold. Jackie set about to change that and got legislation passed that anything that came to the White House became a part of its permanent collection and could not be sold.

She also fully renovated the White House, setting it back to its former glory. She also made pleas on a national scale for people to return or donate to the White House the property of former presidents. Jackie was a fashion icon and made a school for Caroline, but these were not her main contributions as First Lady. Frances Cleveland was the 1st First Lady to give birth while her husband was president.
8. What organization did Jack's legislation begin to help other countries suffering from poverty and disease by challenging American's to serve them?

Answer: The Peace Corps

The Peace Corps began in 1960 when Senator Jack challenged students at the University of Michigan to serve their country by helping those in developing countries. It was from this idea that the Peace Corps came.
9. Why did Jack go to Texas in November 1963?

Answer: There was in-fighting in the Democratic party.

Jack went to Dallas in November 1963 to mediate the in-fighting between Lyndon Johnson and Governor John Connally's sides of the Texas Democratic Committee. Johnson didn't want Jack there at all. However, because Texas was a large state for the Democrats in 1964, Jack felt he had to go and settle the fighting.
10. What is the name of woman who took the now famous photograph of the grassy knoll area of Dealey Plaza as the Kennedy limo passed by it, and is discussed in the film "JFK"?

Answer: Mary Moorman

It was Mary Moorman who took the now famous shot of the grassy knoll as the Kennedy limo passed by it that day. This photograph has been much looked at and studied over the years in hopes of proving a conspiracy in the Kennedy assassination.
