Jill Stein was a gubernatorial candidate in 2002 and 2010. She stood for state representative in the Massachusetts Legislature in 2004. She lost but received 21.3 percent of the vote in a three-way race.

Finally, she proposed a "Medicare for all" universal health care system, such as that in Canada, which she said would save large amounts on health care costs while providing quality care for all.

Jill Stein did not oppose vaccines. She had praised their use to raise the standard of public health and eliminating or reducing diseases such as smallpox, polio, measles and whooping cough. However, she opposed mandatory vaccinations rather then voluntary programs and wanted to eliminate corporate influence on medical regulatory agencies.

Jill Stein's parents were both from Russian Jewish families and she was raised in the denomination known as Reform Judaism. Jill Stein was not a practising Jew at the time when she was running for president in 2016.

"Physicians for Social Responsibility" is a physician led activist group that works to protect the public from nuclear proliferation, dioxin poisoning and climate change. It is the largest physician led activist group in the U.S.

Jill Stein championed the "Secure Green Jobs" initiative in Massachusetts that aimed to create jobs in green industries such as renewable energy by moving subsidies from fossil fuels to renewable energy and other green industries. The initiative received 81 percent of the vote in the eleven districts where it was on the ballot in 2008.
