Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. If I were to say "Tuesday" in Spanish, which word would I use?

Answer: Martes

According to Wikipedia, Spanish was the native language of more than 500 million worldwide as of 2022. It is also the second most-spoken native language after Mandarin Chinese! Although not an official second language of the United States, it is still commonly spoken and taught there.
2. In which language, known for being the original language of the Old Testament, would "Wednesday" translate to Yom Revii?

Answer: Hebrew

More specifically, Classical Hebrew is the language of the Old Testament. It died out around 200 to 400 AD, and was no longer commonly used. However, modern Hebrew was revived in the 19th century and now boasts about 9 million speakers, according to Ethnologue.
3. If I were to say "Friday" in Russian, I would use which word?

Answer: Pyatnitsa

Russian has been cited as one of the hardest languages for English-speakers to learn! This might be in part because of its use of a whole different alphabet, something that Quizzyland unfortunately does not allow for. Russian has about 150 million native-language speakers and 110 million second-language speakers as of 2012, according to Wikipedia.
4. Ah, Sunday in France...a perfect getaway! But Sunday isn't "Sunday" in France. How would you say this day of the week in French?

Answer: Dimanche

"Dimanche" is the word! Sontag, although it sounds more like the English word "Sunday", is actually German. French is not confined to use just in France, though; it's spoken around the world, including in Canada and sub-Saharan Africa. In 2022, it boasted 321 million speakers worldwide.
5. In which language, famous for its ties with sauerkraut, bratwurst, and dirndls, would "Mittwoch" be the word for Wednesday?

Answer: German

German actually shares more ties with English than you might think! English is also a Germanic language, and from that language family only English is spoken more than German. German is also the most-spoken language throughout the European Union.
6. They say that Mondays are Mondays all the world round. But what is the Japanese word for this day of the week?

Answer: Getsuyobi

Of course, this is not how "Getsuyobi" would be spelt in Japanese, considering that that language uses specific characters not encompassed by the English alphabet. Japanese is a widely-spoken language, boasting about 128 million speakers in 2020, according to Wikipedia. It is a part of the Japanese-Ryukyuan language family.
7. Giovedi is the Italian word for which day of the week, known by some to be the day after "hump day"?

Answer: Thursday

Italian is part of the Romance language family, and is the most direct descendant of Latin. It is spoken throughout Italy, of course, as well as Switzerland and Vatican City. It is also commonly spoken in Canada and the U.S.A. in areas of Italian descent.
8. If I were to say "Sunday" in Hebrew, which word would be best?

Answer: Yom Rishon

Surprisingly, Sabbath is not the Hebrew word for Sunday! However, whereas the Sabbath is Sunday in Christianity, in Judaism it is Saturday. Saturday is considered to be the seventh day of the week rather than Sunday in Judaism, which is the first day of the week.
9. Which day of the week, commonly known as the first day in the weekend, translates to Doyobi in Japanese?

Answer: Saturday

Japan does keep weekends of Saturdays and Sundays. However, some schools and other industries required students and workers to attend on Saturdays. Japan also has a similar statuary holiday policy to Canada and the U.S.A.
10. Which language, commonly associated with matryoshka dolls and borscht, translates the word "Thursday" into "Chetverg"?

Answer: Russian

In Polish, Thursday is Czwartek, while in Swedish it is Torsdag. In German, it is Donnerstag. The Russian language has an alphabet of 33 letters, making it sometimes quite difficult to learn. However, attempts are always appreciated.
