5. Who advised Morton to refuse James Garfield's offer of the 1880 vice-presidential nomination on the Republican ticket with him?

Answer: Roscoe Conkling

Conkling, head of the Stalwart Republican political machine in New York State, was an ally of Morton. Conkling was disappointed that Ulysses S. Grant had been denied the 1880 nomination and prefer that his supporters got posts other than the vice-presidency, mainly secretary of the treasury, for New York's support in 1880. He advised Morton to turn down the offer, which he did.

Answer: Whitelaw Reid

While it is the tradition today, in the 19th century, it was not the tradition for the sitting vice-president to be renominated for a second term.
