Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What are the three main ingredients needed to make a petrol engine run?

Answer: Fuel, air and spark

Take away one and the engine will not run. However take away a small amount of one and the engine will run poorly, time for diagnosis!
2. What is the name of the appendage to an engine that charges the battery?

Answer: Alternator

Alternators produce alternating current, much like what comes into your home, but is converted to direct current by the zener diode.
3. What type of engine is Mazda most famous for?

Answer: Rotary Engine

The rotary engine is normally quite small and capable of producing in excess of 10000rpm.
4. What are the two main fuel types typically used in modern cars/trucks?

Answer: Petrol and Diesel

Ethanol, which is made from sugar cane, is starting to take up but, the V8 Supercars mostly run on E85 fuel, which is predominantly made from ethanol.
5. Name the component of an engine that opens and closes the valves on an overhead valve engine?

Answer: Camshaft

The camshaft opens and closes the valves, allowing the air in, and the exhaust gas out. It also allows both valves to close completely, sealing the combustion chamber and allowing the piston to compress the air fuel mixture.
6. What engine component allows the leftover gasses from combustion to escape the engine?

Answer: Exhaust

The modern exhaust has a catalytic converter, which converts the harmful gasses in exhaust fumes, such as carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons, into water and carbon dioxide.
7. What can be called the brain of a motor car?

Answer: Computer

Computers in cars are getting more and more complex, controlling more and more of the cars operating systems. They even "remember" how you drive and fine tune settings to allow for optimum performance for your driving style.
8. What is the name of the component that allows signals to travel from different sensors throughout the engine to the computer?

Answer: Wiring Harness

There are hundreds of meters of cable hidden inside cars. Wiring problems can sometimes be tricky, as they run under carpets and behind trims.
9. What acronym is given to engines that have dual camshafts located at the top of the engine?

Answer: DOHC

Double Overhead Camshaft engines typically are able to produce more power and have higher rev limits than Single Overhead Camshaft engines. I made the other two up.
10. Which of the following is a name given to the pin that holds the piston to the connecting rod?

Answer: Gudgeon pin

The gudgeon pin is quite an important part of the engine. It is under constant stress from the motion of the piston and is subject to different types of force being applied. It is sometimes (e.g. in the USA) known as the wrist pin.
