Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. TAXI! Which of these colours was traditionally associated with licensed cabs in New York City?

Answer: Yellow

The yellow taxi cabs were a familiar sight on the streets of The Big Apple from 1907 onwards. Privately owned, they were licensed by the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission. While there were other taxi-like services in New York, only licensed "medallion" cabs were permitted to pick up as a result of being hailed in the streets.
2. It's as famous an icon as Big Ben or Buckingham Palace: Which of these colours was traditionally associated with public buses in London?

Answer: Red

Horse-drawn buses were introduced in London in 1829 and motor-powered vehicles began to take over in 1902. The double-decked bus became associated with London as successive central holding companies took charge. Officially that red was Pantone 485, CMYK (M:100, Y:91), RGB (223,0,44).[Source: Transport for London]
3. To drive anywhere you needed roads. You often saw earth-making equipment manufactured by the Caterpillar company. Which of these was Caterpillar's distinctive colour?

Answer: Yellow

Founded in 1925 in Peoria, Illinois, U.S.A., the 'Cat' range included virtually every type of wheeled or tracked machine needed to dig, push, carry and load on a construction site or highway project. The company also made engines and power generators.
4. Living the high life: Which of these European airlines introduced green and white colours for its aircraft in 1956?

Answer: Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus was the national carrier of Ireland. The name was an anglicized version of Aer Loingeas, or 'Air Fleet'. It was founded in 1936.
KLM and Easyjet used orange as a base colour, while British Midland used blue.
5. The country singer Kenny Chesney was the man behind a song called "She Thinks My Tractor's Sexy". If that tractor was red, which of these would be the most likely manufacturer?

Answer: Massey Ferguson

Although the modern Massey Ferguson company dated from just 1958, the "Massey" name had been associated with agricultural equipment since 1847 when a man called Daniel Massey opened a workshop in Ontario, Canada, to manufacture farm implements. Ten years later, Alanson Harris opened a rival, also in Ontario, but the two companies merged as Massey-Harris in 1891.

In 1953, Massey-Harris in turn merged with the firm created by the Northern Irish tractor pioneer Harry Ferguson to form a company called Massey-Harris-Ferguson.

The "Harris" was subsequently dropped, as, later, was the hyphen between the two remaining names. Whether they were used to harvest wheat on the cornfields of the world or mow grass in a domestic garden, Massey Ferguson machines were invariably painted a corporate shade of red. The corporate colour of JCB was yellow; John Deere's was green and New Holland's was blue.
6. Motor racing went through many changes in the 20th century. For many years, each country taking part in international events had its own colour. A shade of which of these colours was used by British teams?

Answer: Green

To be accurate that colour was "British Racing Green", adopted, it was said, from the Bentleys that dominated Le Mans in the 1920s. Blue was used by the French, silver by Germany and red by Italy. The USA used blue with white details, or white with blues details, depending on the manufacturers. The colour distinctions ended in 1968 because the Formula One teams wanted to paint cars in the colours of their sponsors.
British Racing Green was a trade-marked shade that was used by manufacturers such as Jaguar and Rover for mass-market cars.
7. Which of these colours was widely used on school buses in the USA and Canada?

Answer: Yellow

It was officially known as National School Bus Glossy Yellow. The colour was adopted in 1939 at a conference to decide on national standards for school buses.
8. "I'm going to sit right down and write myself a letter..." If I lived in the Republic of Ireland, what colour of van would I expect the postman to drive to deliver that letter?

Answer: Green

The state-owned postal service in the Republic of Ireland was An Post (English translation, The Post). The corporate colour of An Post was green. It became one of the largest employers in the Republic of Ireland and as well as a mail-delivering service, it also provided financial services and collected television licence fees on behalf of the national broadcaster, Radio Telefís Éireann (RTÉ).
9. FAB: What was the colour of the Rolls Royce used by Lady Penelope in 'Thunderbirds"?

Answer: Pink

Lady Penelope was the titled woman who assisted International Rescue in the the series "Thunderbirds" on British TV (and in a motion picture) in the 1960s. The action was performed by a variety of puppets and specially-created vehicles, including a futuristic Rolls Royce - pink naturally - driven by Lady P's working class chauffeur, Parker.
The characters often used the phrase "F-A-B" as an indication they understood instructions. The license plate of the Rolls Royce was "FAB 1".
10. Fire engines came in many colours throughout the world, with a growing movement towards luminous hues. In the UK, red was traditionally associated with fire appliances. However, during national fire strikes, Army-operated fire engines were frequently deployed. What colour, traditionally, were Army fire tenders?

Answer: Green

Inevitably they were known as "Green Goddesses". While no one could doubt the enthusiasm of the soldiers who were called on to provide cover, their appliances were woefully outdated by modern standards, with many made before 1968. In 2004, the UK Government enacted new legislation that meant that fire authorities had to turn over their modern machines to the Army if there was to be another strike. Most of the 900 Green Goddesses were sold off.
