Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This "Sugar Puffs" advert featured a monster whose catchphrase was?

Answer: Tell them about the honey, mummy

This puffed wheat cereal is still made by the Quaker Oats Company who also make porridge. Henry McGee (who also appeared regularly in the Benny Hill Show) played the main human character in this ad.
2. British Gas ran a campaign which asked you to tell a particular man about that campaign. What was his name?

Answer: Sid

The purpose of this campaign was to inform the public about the forthcoming privatisation of the company, and the sale of shares to the public. The main campaign tagline was "If you see Sid, tell him". Sid was never seen throughout the campaign.
3. In a long-runing series of ads for British Telecom, what was the name of the mother who said "you have an ology, you have a science"?

Answer: Beattie

The name of the character, Beattie, was derived from the company's acronym "BT". She was played in the adverts by Maureen Lipman. The ads were so popular that a book was released containing the scripts.
4. Which chocolate bar was described in an ad with the phrase "It's crunchy...No, it's chewy"?

Answer: Double Decker

Made by Cadbury, the "Double Decker" consists of a soft and chewy top half whilst the base is formed from crisped rice, hence the different textures.
5. Which company used chimpanzees for many years in its advertising campaigns?

Answer: PG Tips Tea

Older viewers may remember the chimp "Mr Shifter" moving a piano with his son.
PG Tips now uses a knitted monkey in its ad campaign, co-starring Johnny Vegas. These two characters were originally created to advertise the "ITV Digital" TV service. It is probably true to say that they were more popular than "ITV Digital" itself, which soon collapsed. A few years later, PG Tips revived them with great success.
6. What soft drink company described its drinks with the slogan "It's Frothy Man!"

Answer: Cresta

The Cresta ads ran throughout the 1970s, with a polar bear wearing sunglasses as the main character. Cresta is now part of the Coca-Cola Group.
7. Which chocolate bar, when consumed on a one-per-day basis, apparently "helps you work rest and play" - in the UK, at any rate?

Answer: Mars Bar

This confectionery has been manufactured in the UK since 1932, and is named not after the fourth planet from the sun, but after the company's founder, Forrest Mars. Quite often, limited editions with different recipes are produced. In the UK, the full slogan went "A Mars a day helps you work, rest and play".
8. Which popular UK advert parodied a western with a boy with glasses who said "The [product name] are on me"?

Answer: Milky Bars

This particular product is made by Nestle, and was first produced during the 1930s. In 2010 the new ads included a girl playing the lead role, which up until then was always a boy.
9. "Because a lady loves [product name]" is the tag line for which James Bond themed ad campaign?

Answer: Milk Tray

The long-running adverts was made in the style of a James Bond movie, with the main character successfully facing various obstacles in his mission to leave a box of Milk Tray chocolates for a usually unseen lady, along with a business card. In the UK, the packaging is usually purple.
10. What savoury snack was advertised with the slogan "Peanuts - [Company name], they're jungle fresh"?

Answer: Golden Wonder

This campaign ran during the 1970s. Peanuts are not actually nuts, but are from the legume family.
