Michelle Obama was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Her father worked at the city's water plant and her mother was a secretary at a catalog store. Her mother later became a stay at home mom to raise Michelle and her brother. Although they did not have much money, they were a very close family that stayed together.

Two of her roles in the city government were as an assistant for Mayor Daley and later as the assistant commissioner of planning and development for the City of Chicago. She became associate dean of student services at Chicago University in 1996. In 2002 she began her work with University of Chicago's Hospitals as a director of community relations and external affairs.

She continued working with the hospitals until she became First Lady of the White House with her husband's presidential career.
