Michelle Obama was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. Her father worked at the city's water plant and her mother was a secretary at a catalog store. Her mother later became a stay at home mom to raise Michelle and her brother. Although they did not have much money, they were a very close family that stayed together.

Michelle and her brother learned to read and write at an early age. Both skipped the second grade and later were put into study courses for gifted students. Michelle had a special interest in studying French. Michelle graduated as the salutatorian of her class from Whitney M. Young Magnet High School on the west side of Chicago.

The couple was celebrating Barack's accomplishment of finishing the bar in his lawyer career, when Barrack proposed.

After the couple became the presidential family of the United States, Chicago set up a plaque where the couple had their first kiss and date outside of a local shopping center.
