Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Corporal Villalpondo walks into the shop and says he was just out "skating". What is "skating"?

Answer: breezing through the workday by taking it easy and misusing time

"Skating" is very common and for many Marines considered to be an art form. For the record, tearing out pages or altering logbooks is a huge no-no.
2. If Lance Corporal Buff is "sandbagging", what is he/she doing?

Answer: Any or all of these

Oddly, if you were literally bagging sand you wouldn't be "sandbagging" because it is very strenuous work.
3. Most people know that "scuttlebutt" is another word for rumors. What is another definition of this common thing?

Answer: a drinking fountain

I love that word. Scuttlebutt. It has a cute ring to it, doesn't it.
4. There was once a time in the very beginning when Corporal Norton was completely "lost in the sauce". What was this Corporal Norton?

Answer: very very confused

I always think of spaghetti when this term is used.
5. Ok, here's a very easy one. The whatever is broken. The Lt Colonel SoandSo wants it fixed. Data platoon finds no other way than to "jimmyrig" it. What is "jimmyrigging"?

Answer: fixing it by any means possible

Yes, I know "jimmyrigging" is done in all trades. Sometimes you have to pull a McGyver though, especially when you are out in the desert. Think duct tape, a Gerber, some rope, and those guys in Houston in Apollo 13.
6. Marines are called many things, some of which I can't put here. One of them is a "boot". What's a "boot"?

Answer: a Marine fresh out of boot camp

You kind of just want to grab em' around the neck and give em' a nuggie. Welcome...among other things. ;)
7. A very large percentage of Marines are considered "pogues". What does this sometimes derogatory term mean?

Answer: any Marine with an MOS (job) other than infantry or artillery

Yes, it's true, not all Marines are snipers. There are many other duties in the Marines, such as comm, administration, NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical), armory, suppy...you get the idea.
8. This Corporal Norton that was mentioned before always tried to get barracks duty when she knew there was a "hump" the following morning. What was this "hump" that she wanted to get out of so badly?

Answer: a long march or hike

Unless one is hardcore, humps are dreaded. It's true they are very motivating and an integral part of training but getting up at 3 am to be at the armory by 4 so you can climb hills in full gear and sweat out all the alcohol from the night before is not fun...until it's over.
9. The term "butterbar" should only be used when certain Marines are out of earshot. What Marine would this be?

Answer: a 2nd Lieutenant

Yes, this is a derogatory term and should not be used at all.
10. What is a Marine expected to do if they drop their rifle?

Answer: drop and push

That's just the way it is. I suppose it's just a way of saving face and working on your upper body at the same time. Oh, by the way weapons should ALWAYS be on safe unless it's being fired.

I had fun making this quiz and I hope you enjoyed it. It brought many memories.
