Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Fortitude", meaning courage, and "Per Mare, Per Terram" (By Sea, By Land) were both mottos of the Marine Corps before "Semper Fidelis" was finally decided upon. Which was a third motto?

Answer: To the shores of Tripoli

"To the shores of Tripoli" was the third motto used before "Semper Fidelis" was finally decided upon.
2. Where were the 'Banana Wars' fought?

Answer: Central America and the Caribbean

The Banana Wars (fought from about 1898-1934) were a series of occupations, skirmishes and conflicts fought in Central America and the Caribbean involving the US Marines and insurgents. These police actions were fought in order to enforce the Monroe Doctrine. The Marine Corps earned the reputation for being an expeditionary force able to combat guerrillas in limited conflicts.
3. The 5th and 6th Marine Regiments were decorated by the French for their service during WWI. What are these two regiments authorized to wear?

Answer: The fourragere

Every Marine in either the 5th or 6th Regiment is authorized to wear the fourragere of the Croix de Guerre on his left shoulder. Marines in the other infantry regiments mockingly call it the 'pogue rope'.
4. Lieutenant Colonel Earl 'Pete' Ellis produced a document entitled "Operation Plan 712". What did this document predict?

Answer: A Pacific war with Japan

Lieutenant Colonel Ellis' Operation Plan 712 predicted a Pacific war against Japan. This document not only predicted where and who, but also a detailed analysis on how to wage a campaign by island hopping. This strategy was foretold 20 years before the attack on Pearl Harbor. Lt. Col. Ellis died under suspicious circumstances while spying in the Palau Islands in 1921.
5. Besides being armored, what other major advantage did the LVT have over the Higgins Boat?

Answer: It could operate on land

The Higgins Boat was invaluable in WWII but Marines preferred the LVT because of its armament and armour. The one major advantage it had over the Higgins Boat was the fact that it was a true amphibian; it could not only get the troops to the beach but also support them as they moved inland.
6. During the Korean war, what nickname was given to the attack at the Chosin Reservoir?

Answer: The Frozen Chosin

This fierce engagement is universally known as the Frozen Chosin. Marines withstood counterattacks by the Communist Chinese Forces in temperatures that were -30 degrees.
7. Six recruits drowned in the Ribbon Creek Incident during recruit training at Parris Island. What was the one positive outcome of this tragic event?

Answer: The School of the Drill Instructor

The one positive outcome of this unfortunate incident was the establishment of the School of the Drill Instructor. Raw brutality and intimidation was to be replaced with professionalism, motivation and leadership by example. As a sign that a new day was here, Drill Instructors donned the distinct campaign cover (smokie).
8. When was the Code of Conduct introduced to the US Armed forces?

Answer: After the Korean War

The Code of Conduct was introduced to the US Armed Forces after the Korean War. The fact that there was not one single successful escape attempt and the ease in which some servicemen offered aid and sympathy to their Communist captors demanded a change in how servicemen saw themselves, their country and what was expected of them in captivity.
9. During recruit training, what was a 'blanket party'?

Answer: An unauthorized punishment

A blanket party was an unauthorized punishment meted out to a wayward recruit in hopes of either squaring him away or sending him to the hospital. The poor private who received one had a blanket thrown over him at night and was pummelled. Although they were unauthorized and frowned upon, they did happen.
10. When is someone CASEVACed?

Answer: After being wounded in combat

Someone who is CASEVACed (CASualty EVACuation) is being being moved to an aid station after being wounded in combat. The US Army calls this procedure MEDEVACed.
