This brutalist architectural building is located on a cold, remote hill in the Central Balkan Mountains, the site of the last battle between Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire. It was built in 1974 as a monument to Communism and was covered in mosaics inside and out. When the communist regime fell in Bulgaria, it was closed and left to vandals who have covered it in graffiti.

This is a picture of one of the rooms in the Villa of Mysteries in the ruined city of Pompeii, Italy. This location became abandoned in AD 79 when Mount Vesuvius famously erupted in catastrophic fashion, killing most of the city's inhabitants and burying them and the city in lava and ash.

The city of Plymouth, the capital of Monserrat, became a ghost town in 1995 when the nearby Soufriere Hills volcano started erupting. The volcano spewed gas, ash and lava causing the town to evacuate. There was damage throughout the city and it is still a ghost town.

Fort Drum was a natural feature that was transformed into a concrete island shaped like a battleship. Its main purpose was harbor defense, and was effectively rebuilt with turrets and guns. The site was abandoned after WWII and was subsequently widely looted for the metal it contains.

It now supports an automated light put in place by the Philippine Coast guard for use as a directional sea light.

These armed towers on the Thames and Mersey rivers are remnants of defensive buildings from WWII. The Royal Navy used them to report incoming air raids and to stop the laying of mines in the surrounding waters. Some had anti-aircraft guns on them. In the 1960s, some of them were occupied by "Pirate Radio" stations such as Radio City and Radio Invicta.
