Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We begin our road trip in Alaska where we head out via Alaska Route 2 towards the Canadian border. Which major Alaskan city is connected to this highway?

Answer: Fairbanks

Alaska State Route 2 connects with city of Fairbanks. If we take Alaska Route 2 eastbound, we would need to travel approximately 296 mi / 476 km from Fairbanks to reach the Canadian border. Alaska Route 2 is the first part of the Alaska Highway.
2. As we cross the Canadian border from Alaska Route 2, which Canadian province or territory will we enter first?

Answer: Yukon Territory

Crossing the border via Alaska Route 2 will bring us into the Yukon Territory. When we emerge we will be then be travelling along Yukon Highway 1. Yukon Highway 1 runs along the southern portion of the Yukon and even makes its way into portions of British Columbia before coming back within the borders of the Yukon.
3. We continue on and eventually end up in the province of Alberta. We then turn onto Alberta Highway 2. Which of these cities would we not pass through travelling along this route?

Answer: Fort McMurray

Alberta Highway 2 begins near the city of Grand Prairie. It loops to the north to the town of Peace River before turning back to the south towards Edmonton. Remaining on Alberta Highway 2 southbound we will pass by the cities of Red Deer and Calgary.
4. Our journey continues via Alberta Highways 3 and 4, passing the city of Lethbridge, Alberta. At the southern terminus of Alberta Highway 4 we will cross the American border into the state of Montana. We will now be travelling southbound on Interstate 15. Which of these cities will we not visit if we remain on I-15?

Answer: Denver, Colorado

Denver, Colorado does not fall on or near Interstate 15. I-15 does take us past the cities of Great Falls, Idaho Falls and Salt Lake City. If we were to continue southbound on Interstate 15 we would eventually reach the cities of Las Vegas, Nevada and San Diego, California.
5. Exiting I-15 near Provo, Utah, we will continue travelling southeast making our way over to Interstate 25. Which of these cities lies at the Southern terminus of I-25?

Answer: Las Cruces, New Mexico

When exiting I-15 near Provo, Utah (according to Google Maps) we would need to travel along Federal Highways 6, 191, 491 and 550 in order to reach Interstate 25 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Continuing southbound on I-25 we will reach its southern terminus at Las Cruces, New Mexico.
6. As we cross the border from El Paso, Texas into Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, on which Mexican highway will we be able continue our journey?

Answer: 45

Passing Las Cruces we continue eastbound on Interstate 10 for a short duration until we reach El Paso, Texas. At El Paso, we turn southbound on Interstate 110 towards the Mexican border. When we cross the border we will enter onto Mexican Federal Highway 45 at Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.
7. After a long trek through Mexico, we eventually pass through Guatemala and into Honduras. Travelling on Central American Highway 5 in Honduras we'll eventually pass Toncontin International Airport, which serves which city?

Answer: Tegucigalpa

Using Google Maps, the shortest and quickest route through Mexico is a whopping 1,750 mi / 2,816 km (almost 32 hrs) from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico to the Guatemalan border at El Ceibo, Mexico.

Toncontin International Airport serves the city of Tegucigalpa, Honduras. The airport is infamous for being challenging for pilots due to the terrain. Aircraft arriving here often have to make a sharp turn before making their final approach.
8. Next, we continue our journey along Central American Highway 6 and cross into the next country bordering Honduras to the southeast. Which country is it?

Answer: Nicaragua

Nicaragua is the next country bordering Honduras to the southeast. El Salvador borders to the southwest, Costa Rica and Belize share no land border with Honduras. Continuing our drive through Nicaragua to the southeast would then bring us into Costa Rica.
9. For the next leg of our journey we pass through Costa Rica and make our way into Panama. In Panama, we will cross the Bridge of The Americas, which spans the Panama Canal. What type of bridge is it?

Answer: Steel Arch

The Bridge of The Americas is a steel arch bridge that spans the Pacific Ocean entrance to the Panama Canal. The bridge was completed in 1962. A second major bridge to span the Panama Canal, the Centennial Bridge, lies further to the north. It is a cable-stayed bridge which opened in 2004 to provide traffic relief for the Bridge of The Americas.
10. We have traversed North America from Alaska all the way down to Panama. I'm hoping our journey will be able to continue into South America. The next country would be Colombia. Are we able to cross into Colombia from Panama by road?

Answer: No

Unfortunately there is no road access from Panama to Colombia due to the Darien Gap, an area of dense rainforest and swamps. Due to high costs and environmental concerns roads have not been constructed in the Darien Gap. Only off-road vehicles are be able to pass through the gap, though it can be a difficult trek for even the most skilled drivers.
