Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In this cute Jeep Liberty commercial, a man was joined in song by a squirrel, a wolf and a couple of birds who entered his vehicle. What song did they all sing together?

Answer: Rock Me Gently

Entitled "Pouring In", Jeep's 2007 ad showed a man opening his sunroof and turning up the stereo as he drove along. He was joined by a squirrel who, to the man's surprise, began singing along to "Rock Me Gently". The man joined in and soon two birds flew in the sunroof and perched on the backs of the seats.

As they all sang together, a wolf, who jumped in the sunroof, swallowed one of the birds. The remaining bird, the squirrel and the man all looked at the wolf as if to say "we're singing here".

The wolf then spit the bird out so he could pick up the song with, "baby, baby...". The animals and the man continued singing together as they drove on. Jeep's tagline was "Have fun out there". "Rock Me Gently" was a number one hit for Andy Kim in 1974.
2. At the pet store with his daughter, a man asked if he could write a check for their purchase. The pet store owner said he'd need to see some ID and then said he'd have to call this in. While he called it in and asked for a second ID, "Love is in the Air" began playing in this commercial for Visa Check Card. What kind of pets were the man and his daughter purchasing?

Answer: Rabbits

The daughter picked out two bunnies and the father attempted to pay for them with a check. As soon as the owner asked for ID, the two rabbits were shown in their cage, eyeing each other, as "Love is in the Air" began playing. The next shot, which was priceless, was of the daughter's shocked expression as she watched the rabbits.

The owner asked for a second ID, commented that the photo didn't look like the man and asked for a birth date. Each time the man and his daughter were shown, the rabbits had multiplied and were eventually everywhere, including on the man's head. Oblivious to what was going on, the owner said again that he'd have to phone this in, only what he picked up and brought to his ear wasn't a telephone receiver, but a rabbit! The voice over at the end told us to use Visa Check Card the next time instead of checks, "It'll get you in, out, and on with life". "Love is in the Air" was a top ten US and UK hit for John Paul Young in 1978.
3. Three traveling salesmen launched into an impromptu, mumbled sing along of REO Speedwagon's "Take it on the Run" while they were working on laptops in their hotel room. Who was the commercial for?

Answer: Holiday Inn

Part of a series of Holiday Inn commercials featuring salesmen Ted, Marcus and Zach, this one mentioned the high-speed internet available. As the three men were working on their laptops, Ted was listening to "Take it on the Run" on his headphones, and began singing out loud. Marcus and Zach looked at each other, laughed, and then began mimicking Ted. Ted took his headphones off when he noticed the other two were singing, but didn't realize they were making fun of him.

Instead, Ted thought they were showing teamwork by joining him, and the three of them continued singing together.

Other ads in the series involved Zach doing a Joe Buck imitation, in front of Joe Buck; Ted giving the guys pillows as gifts, and then waiting for the guys to use them; and Ted's vacation story being ruined by Marcus. "Take it on the Run" was a number five US hit for REO Speedwagon in 1981.
4. The Ocean Spray bog guys said that to stay healthy you should watch your diet and get plenty of exercise. Then they suggested that you shouldn't just exercise, you should bogercise. What song did the older guy play on his boombox to accompany the bogercisers?

Answer: Disco Inferno

The younger bog guy demonstrated curling exercises using the tasty twelve ounce Diet Ocean Spray with real fruit juice and only five calories. After the others began bogercising, the younger guy started to, but the older guy looked disapprovingly at him and he sort of stopped.

The tagline for the commercial, "Straight from the bog", showed on the screen as the older guy reminded us that there were only five calories in a bottle. "Disco Inferno" was also used in the Tabasco Sauce commercial called "Tan Lines", where the woman's Tabasco bikini gave her a sunburn.

The song failed to reach the top 40 on the pop charts when The Trammps first released it, but "Disco Inferno" climbed all the way to number eleven following its re-release after being included on the "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack in 1977.
5. This 2002 ad made mention of a spinning class, Mayan ruins, ice skating and a rock wall, while "Lust for Life" played. What was being advertised?

Answer: Cruise line

The commercial for Royal Caribbean International cruise lines showed two kids and their dad looking at a picture near some ruins. Someone asked what it meant and another replied that it was something about mom and a spinning class. We cut to mom working hard in a spinning class on board the ship while the music started.

This was followed by a montage of the family enjoying activities such as horseback riding, snorkeling, ice skating, four-wheeling, exploring and rock wall climbing. From the voice over we hear, "Somewhere between the Mayan ruins, the ice rink, the horseback riding, and the rock wall it hits you.

This is way more than a cruise". Iggy Pop's "Lust for Life", used in the commercial with a lyrics change, was from the 1977 album with the same name.
6. After a selection was made on an old-fashioned jukebox, the Samsung Juke Music Phone flipped open and acted as the stylus on the record. What song did it play?

Answer: Juke Box Hero

We heard change being dropped into a jukebox, and then saw the vinyl record selection being flipped in to place. The phone flipped open and began playing "Juke Box Hero". Closeups of the phone were shown, followed by an incoming call being answered by a woman.

The voice over in the ad from 2007 told us, "Samsung. Leading the music phone revolution". "Juke Box Hero" is from Foreigner's 1981 album "4".
7. In this 2006 commercial, a company's mascot was shown giving his products a final inspection before sending them off with a tear in his eye. The song "Never Gonna Let You Go" and a spinning disco ball completed the scene. What mascot was this?

Answer: Michelin Man

A tire was shown going through various tests while the voice over said that Michelin's tires were rigorously tested and each one received a thorough hand inspection. As the music began, we saw Bibendum, aka the Michelin Man, lovingly running his hands over a tire, hugging the tire, and then tearing up as the tire was taken away.

His face brightened again when he turned back to the table to find another tire waiting for him. "Never Gonna Let You Go" was a number four hit in the US for Sergio Mendes in 1983.
8. Which popular candy bar used the songs "Let it Whip" and "Let's Get it On" in two of its 2008 commercials?

Answer: Reese's

The ad which used the Dazz Band's "Let it Whip" was for Reese's Whipps. While the song played and half a candy bar floated across the screen, the text said they admitted they were whipped, and they were proud of it. The logo over the packaged bar at the end said "Perfectly Whipped". Reese's ad for its Peanut Butter Egg featured a chocolate Easter bunny which hopped over to a jar of peanut butter. To the strains of Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get it On", the bunny and the jar leaned in for a kiss, followed by lots of Reese's Peanut Butter Eggs floating skyward.

The tagline for the spot was "Perfectly Easter".
9. On the GM assembly line, one of the robots was escorted off the premises after making a mistake. While "All by Myself" played, we saw the robot trying out a couple of jobs, while being constantly reminded of his former life every time he saw a GM vehicle. Finally, in despair, the robot jumped off of a bridge. What happened next?

Answer: He woke up and realized he had been dreaming.

In GM's 2007 commercial entitled "Robot", the assembly line was running fine until one robot dropped a bolt and said, "Uh oh". The line came to a stop and the other employees, both humans and robots, all looked at him disappointingly. Out on the street, he tried being a sign holder and a drive-thru speaker, but finally in despair he jumped off of a bridge.

After we saw the robot fall into the water, the scene cut to the robot waking with a start. With a sigh of relief, he realized he was still on the assembly line and had only been dreaming.

The voice over by Matt Dillon told us that with GM's 100,000 mile warranty, everyone there was obsessed with quality. "All by Myself" was a number two hit in the US for Eric Carmen.
10. While entertaining a blond woman in his apartment, a Chips Ahoy cookie was singing along to the song "Da Ya Think I'm Sexy?". What artist had a number one hit with the song in the 1970s?

Answer: Rod Stewart

At his high-rise apartment, the cookie was singing the song while demonstrating his moves for his very impressed girlfriend. While leaning in for a kiss, a hand suddenly reached down and grabbed him, ironically after he'd just sung the line "just reach out and touch me".

Not realizing the full extent of what had just happened, the girlfriend said "call me" as she waved up after him. Nabisco's 2008 Chips Ahoy commercial included the tagline "They go fast". Rod Stewart topped the charts with the song in 1978.
