Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Originally a "Tennessee Volunteer", after completing my term as commander-in-chief I went back home and made numerous attempts to become a member of the House of Representatives. Even though I would never achieve this aim, in 1874 I did become the first president of the United States to only become a senator after being president.

Answer: Andrew Johnson

The only president from the list that's from Tennessee is Andrew Johnson. President Johnson's presidential term came to an end in 1869 and as mentioned he was elected to the U.S senate in 1874. As a senator, Johnson wasn't all that effective and was mostly known for his speech on the senate floor speaking against president Ulysses S. Grant's reconstruction plan.
2. Serving as an army officer for most of my adulthood, before becoming the twelfth president of the United States, I didn't exercise my right to vote in an election until I was in my 60s.

Answer: Zachary Taylor

As an officer in the army, Zachary Taylor wasn't able to vote because he was constantly moving around, and thus had no official residence which is needed to vote. He also showed no interest until later on in his life in sharing his political affiliation. Few are aware that even though Zachary was a slave owner, he was also a strong nationalist, who vigorously opposed expanding slavery into future territories of the United States.
3. Not only did I acquire California and New Mexico from Mexico as the president of the United States, I authorized the creation of the Smithsonian Institution after years of debate. My nickname was "Young Hickory".

Answer: James Polk

On August 10, 1846 President Polk signed a bill establishing the Smithsonian Institution. An English chemist and mineralogist named James Smithson died in 1829, and in his will. Mr. Smithson stated he wanted his estate to go to the United States, "to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge." What's even more ironic than leaving your estate to a foreign government. James Smithson had never even been to the United States.
4. Aside from the fact I signed the emancipation proclamation act in 1863, I am also one of the most discussed US presidents in schools. Of all the things I'm known for, one of the less famous is the fact that I was granted a patent for an idea to lift boats over shoals, which I developed after visiting Niagara Falls.

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Developed with help from a mechanic from Springfield Illinois named Walter Davis, Abraham Lincoln received his patent (Patent No. 6469) in 1849. However, even though Lincoln's idea never went further than a model, that model can be viewed at the Smithsonian in Washington D.C.
5. The first seven presidents prior to me were all born British subjects. This made me the first president that was born an American citizen. Do you know who I am?

Answer: Martin Van Buren

Being a descendant of Dutch immigrants, Martin Van Buren was born on December 5, 1782, in Kinderhook, New York. The family only spoke Dutch at home making English the future president's secondary language. Martin Van Buren was the first to become president as an actual citizen.
6. Growing up I loved baseball, but given my large frame I wasn't that fast at running the bases. I have the honor of being the first chief executive officer of the U.S. to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the baseball season.

Answer: William Howard Taft

Considering he wasn't able to run quick and holds the record for being the heaviest of presidents, William Howard Taft was actually a good hitter and in 1910 he unknowingly started the tradition that is still performed more than 100 years later, when at Griffith Stadium in Washington, D.C. he threw out the first ball on opening day in professional baseball.
7. I would one day lead both the pro-business Bourbon Democrats and the United States itself. From 1871 to 1873, I oversaw the public executions of two men as sheriff of Erie County, New York. My opponents in the 1884 presidential election would use this against me and call me "the Buffalo Hangman".

Answer: Grover Cleveland

One of the criminals was put to death for the stabbing and killing of his mother, and the other for his part in shooting to death a man in an argument at a saloon. Cleveland's supporters argued that he was a man of integrity for doing the task himself and not delegating it.

He would go on to win that presidential election serving the first of what would be another presidential term 4 years later.
8. As a child I was sick quite often, and I attended Harvard for my secondary education. While there I was an accomplished boxer, and once while I was in a boxing match my opponent, C. S. Hanks, bloodied my nose after the bell had already rung!

Answer: Theodore Roosevelt

The crowd became hostile after the punch. They felt Theodore had been sucker punched, but being the sportsman he was. Theodore Roosevelt insisted to everyone that Hanks didn't hear the bell ring and even walked over to his opponent to shake his hand. This act of sportsmanship ignited the crowd attending the match and they went hysterical cheering for Mr. Roosevelt.
9. I'm a battle hardened general who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1843. Despite this, I will admit to being squeamish, at least when it comes to animal blood. I only eat my steak well done and you won't see me touching fowl nor hunting.

Answer: Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant was completely opposite of what one would expect from a battle tested soldier. He didn't like hearing dirty jokes; he was a modest individual that was soft spoken. Rarely would one hear any profanity come from this Ohioan who grew up in a rural town in the southern part of the state.
10. I loved Anne Coleman and we were engaged to be married. When she broke off our engagement and shortly thereafter committed suicide, I never subsequently married because of the grief and guilt I feel for her death. My niece Harriet Lane served as White House hostess during my presidency.

Answer: James Buchanan

James Buchanan wasn't ever able to fill that void created after Anne's death and many say he became involved in politics as a way to escape the grief. He was quoted as saying "I have lost the only earthly object of my affections," he also said, "without whom life presents to me a dreary blank."
