Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Originally a "Tennessee Volunteer", after completing my term as commander-in-chief I went back home and made numerous attempts to become a member of the House of Representatives. Even though I would never achieve this aim, in 1874 I did become the first president of the United States to only become a senator after being president.
2. Serving as an army officer for most of my adulthood, before becoming the twelfth president of the United States, I didn't exercise my right to vote in an election until I was in my 60s.
3. Not only did I acquire California and New Mexico from Mexico as the president of the United States, I authorized the creation of the Smithsonian Institution after years of debate. My nickname was "Young Hickory".
4. Aside from the fact I signed the emancipation proclamation act in 1863, I am also one of the most discussed US presidents in schools. Of all the things I'm known for, one of the less famous is the fact that I was granted a patent for an idea to lift boats over shoals, which I developed after visiting Niagara Falls.
5. The first seven presidents prior to me were all born British subjects. This made me the first president that was born an American citizen. Do you know who I am?
6. Growing up I loved baseball, but given my large frame I wasn't that fast at running the bases. I have the honor of being the first chief executive officer of the U.S. to throw out the ceremonial first pitch of the baseball season.
7. I would one day lead both the pro-business Bourbon Democrats and the United States itself. From 1871 to 1873, I oversaw the public executions of two men as sheriff of Erie County, New York. My opponents in the 1884 presidential election would use this against me and call me "the Buffalo Hangman".
8. As a child I was sick quite often, and I attended Harvard for my secondary education. While there I was an accomplished boxer, and once while I was in a boxing match my opponent, C. S. Hanks, bloodied my nose after the bell had already rung!
9. I'm a battle hardened general who graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1843. Despite this, I will admit to being squeamish, at least when it comes to animal blood. I only eat my steak well done and you won't see me touching fowl nor hunting.
10. I loved Anne Coleman and we were engaged to be married. When she broke off our engagement and shortly thereafter committed suicide, I never subsequently married because of the grief and guilt I feel for her death. My niece Harriet Lane served as White House hostess during my presidency.
