Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts

Answer: July 19, 1545

'Mary Rose' was the pride of King Henry VIII. It sank whilst he was watching. The hull was raised intact on Oct.11,1982.
2. What is so significant about the shipwreck found by George Bass and Cemal Pulak at Uluburun, Turkey?

Answer: It is the world's oldest shipwreck.

The shipwreck at Uluburun is dated back to the Late Bronze Age by archaeologists Bass and Pulak. It was discovered in 1982 off the coast of Turkey.
3. What ship ran aground off the North Carolina coast in June, 1718?

Answer: Queen Anne's Revenge

This was Blackbeard's biggest ship. A wreck discovered in 1996 is thought to be it. Pandora sank in 1790 off Australia's Great Barrier Reef. Rita is the boat from the old flick 'Creature From The Black Lagoon', and the Vesta is the ship that carried Dracula to England.
4. What ships, used by the United States Navy during the War of 1812, sank on Aug.7, 1813, on Lake Ontario?

Answer: 'Hamilton' and 'Scourge'

They both sank in a sudden storm. 'Hunley' is a sunken Confederate submarine. If the rest are actually names of ships, it is merely a coincidence.
5. What is the significance of the ship 'San Juan de Sicilia'?

Answer: It was one of the Spanish Armada.

In 1588, after being beaten by the English Navy, the Spanish Armada set sail for home. Twenty-six more ships sank on the voyage back to Spain. 'San Juan de Sicilia' blew up, due to apparent sabotage, when it stopped to make repairs on the Scottish coast. If you enjoyed this short quiz on shipwrecks, there are many websites you will enjoy.
