Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The F/A-18 can easily land on a carrier because its weight is able to be supported and it is equipped with correct equipment. Yes or no?

Answer: Yes

The F/A-18 is usually carrier-based except for training over land. The standard F/A-18 is equipped for carrier landing but it is able to be built without that capability for installation of special equipment.
2. From 2021, what aircraft did the Blue Angels flight demonstration team begin to fly?

Answer: F/A-18E Super Hornet

The US Navy Blue Angels are an elite flight exhibition squadron that perform at many major air shows like the one at Oshkosh in eastern Wisconsin. Between 1986 and 2020 they flew the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, before adopting the Super Hornet in 2021.
3. You see a F/A-18 streaking across the sky. Half way across the sky, you see a white ring form around the fuselage, then the ring disappeared. What is generally (but not wholly accurately) believed to have just happened to the aircraft?

Answer: The aircraft just broke the speed of sound barrier

In fact, the white ring is caused by the particular body of moist air suddenly passing into a different air mass as the jet speeds through. If and when this happens depends on several climate factors. The speed of sound varies with similar factors but simply put this cone effect does not always happen whenever a jet or any other mass breaks the sound barrier regardless of how commonly this is portrayed on aviation and military internet websites. The cone may (or may not) happen at varying speeds below and above the ACTUAL speed of sound at the given location so this myth is not always true.

Only the speed of sound has been broken by aircraft. Current theories of physics state that nothing can travel faster than light. If an aircraft goes though a cloud, not much would happen.
4. Which of the following must you do to fly a F/A-18?

Answer: Become a Naval Pilot have carrier aircraft experience and spend a while in special training where you learn to master the G-Force.

There is an entire different "academy" that teaches the personnel to master the entirely different machine and to master the increased G-Forces when doing highly complex moves in the sky.
5. The F/A-18 has ONE Turbine Engine.

Answer: False

The F/A-18 has TWO Turbine Engines, which gives it the ability to break the speed of sound. Take the F-16 VTOL Aircraft for example, because it takes off vertically, the construction of it is only with one engine, so it can't break the sound barrier.
6. How many seats are there in an F/A-18?

Answer: One or Two Seats

The F/A-18, like the early Mustangs in WWII, have the ability to put in two seats for training or a space for an optional bomb man, who controls the bomb on the aircraft. If there were a high number of hostiles on a bombing mission the two seated F/A-18 would be used.
7. What Does the F/A mean in F/A-18 aircraft?

Answer: Fighter and Attacker

F/A is rarely given to new models of aircraft because of the strict criteria that the plane has to meet. Attackers have the ability to carry bombs and Fighters have the ability to carry missiles. Because of this mix, the F/A-18 can carry many lightweight weapons that other warplanes can't.
8. The USAF (United States Air Force) are the only Air Force that uses the F/A-18.

Answer: False

The F/A-18 is primarily used by the USMC (United States Marine Corps), the USN (United States Navy), the RAAF (Royal Australian Air Force) and the Spanish Air Force. Other countries use this Aircraft like Canada, Malaysia, Finland and many other air forces around the world.
9. What is the F/A-18 Hornet's closest "relative"?

Answer: The F/A-18E Super Hornet

The Super Hornet is a later version of the Hornet and features many new upgrades. It is capable to carry and deploy every weapon known to the U.S. Navy. The F-35B VTOL, along with the British Harrier aircraft, are one of the only aircraft in the world with VTOL capability. Unfortunately, the Harrier can't fly for long period of time because of the huge amount of fuel consumed by liftoff.
10. The F/A-18 was the latest release of aircraft that is classified as a Fighter and an Attacker.

Answer: False

If you were paying attention to the introduction (which most people don't) the F/A-18 was actually the first aircraft of that F/A title. There are very few major aircraft with the F/A mark. Many F/A aircraft are just prototypes for now. Have fun!
