Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Beef flavour hot drink
Answer: Bovril
Bovril was first developed in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War as a way to provide troops with beef that was easily transported and stored. The brand name Bovril was first used in 1889. Bovril is associated with football matches in the UK, where it was traditional for fans to drink it while watching matches, especially in winter.
2. Bleach-based household cleaner
Answer: Domestos
Domestos is a well known brand of bleach in the UK. It is known for its adverts featuring animated germs being thwarted from taking over by Domestos. The product was developed by Wilfred Handley, an industrial chemist from Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1921.
3. Stock cubes and buillion
Answer: Knorr
Knorr was originally a German brand and was founded in 1838 by Carl Heinrich Theodor Knorr. The brand was acquired by Unilever in 2000. It is a worldwide brand with products under the Knorr brand available in over 90 countries.
4. Yeast extract-based savoury spread
Answer: Marmite
Marmite is a dark paste made from yeast extract which is a by-product from the beer brewing industry. Marmite has a strong and distinctive, salty taste which people seem to either like or dislike, leading to Marmite's famous 'love it or hate it' advertising slogan.
The 'love it or hate it' aspect of Marmite is so well known in the UK that the term 'Marmite' is often used to describe something or someone that polarises public opinion.
5. Haircare products
Answer: TRESemme
TRESemme originated in the USA in 1949 as a brand for salon only haircare products made by Godefroy Manufacturing. As the products became more popular it started to be sold in supermarkets and pharmacies. The brand was bought by Alberto-Culver in 1969 which was then taken over by Unilever in 2010. The name of the brand comes from the French "très-aimé" meaning well loved.
6. Mayonnaise
Answer: Hellmann's
Hellmann's mayonnaise was developed by Richard Hellmann, a German immigrant to New York who created it for the deli he opened in 1905. The mayonnaise grew in popularity and by 1912 Hellmann had set up a factory to manufacture the mayonnaise in greater amounts.
In some countries and parts of the USA Hellmann's mayonnaise is sold under the Best Foods brand. Hellmann's (and the Best Foods brand) was acquired by Unilever in 2000.
7. Mustard
Answer: Colman's
The Colman's brancd was founded by Jeremiah Colman in 1814 in a village near the English city of Norwich. In 1828 his adopted nephew James joined the business which became known as J & J Colman. As the business grew they moved to a site on Carrow Road in Norwich where the company is still based. Carrow Road is also famous as the location of Norwich City Football Club's ground. Colman's is still closely associated with Norwich and there is a Colman's Mustard shop and museum in the city centre.
8. Margarine
Answer: Stork
Stork margarine was first introduced in the UK in 1920. It was not very popular when it launched as people were concerned about how it would work in recipes and suspicious as to any health effects it may have. It was heavily advertised in the 1930s but really gained in popularity during the Second World War when butter was rationed and people started to look for an alternative.
It is still used today in the UK especially in home baking.
9. Ice cream
Answer: Ben and Jerry's
Ben and Jerry's was established in Vermont in 1978 by friends Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield. The company was sold to Unilever in 2000 and, although the Ben and Jerry name is still used, the founders themselves do not have any board or management involvement with the company.
10. Grooming products for men
Answer: Lynx (or Axe)
The first Axe products were deodorants and were launched in 1983 in France. The products were marketed under the brand name Lynx in the UK due to the name Axe being already trademarked in that country. The Lynx brand is also used in some other countries including Ireland, Australia, New Zealand and China.
The product range has grown over the years and now includes shower gels, shampoos and hair styling products as well as deodorants.
