Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Here's one thing that Cameron got correct in his film "Titanic": the identity of the first officer. Who was he?

Answer: William Murdoch

In Cameron's film, Murdoch is seen committing suicide. His home town, however, disputes this claim. According to them, he never would have done such a "cowardly" thing. Many survivor accounts also back up this claim.
2. True or false? One particularly rich woman refused to enter one of the Titanic's lifeboats. To coax her into a boat, a staff member threw her prized music box into a life boat.

Answer: True

Oddly enough, this story is true! The music box was shaped like a pig. When its tail was wound, it played a tune. In another Titanic-related film, a woman playing one of these odd musical devices can be seen, huddled in one of the lifeboats.
3. True or false? Binoculars were not immediately available to the Titanic's lookouts at the time of the sinking.

Answer: True

David Blair was supposed to by the second officer. However, he was replaced by Henry Wilde. As he was packing, he accidentally took the key to the container housing the binoculars.
4. The 1997 movie hits spot-on once again with its depiction of the Titanic's final moments, during which one of the four funnels rips free of its restraints. Which funnel collapsed in both fact and fiction?

Answer: Number 1

It was the first funnel. Interestingly enough, the fourth funnel wasn't functional. It was entirely for show. Back then, liners gained fame via their profiles, and a four-funnel ship certainly attracted a great deal of attention.
5. In the Halifax graveyard containing the bodies of many of the Titanic's victims, there actually is a grave marker for a certain "J. Dawson". Contrary to popular belief and Hollywood lore, though, his name is not the same as a certain DiCaprio character's. What, then, is his name?

Answer: Joseph Dawson

Like Jack, Joseph was lower on the ship's social food chain. Actually, he was lower than Jack! He was a trimmer, who worked his days away by providing the stokers with coal. According to records, he was twenty-three when he signed up for duty.
6. Most of the Titanic's contents were dumped onto the ocean floor during its descent, as evidenced in the portions of Cameron's film which depict the wreck's debris trail. Which of the following object, however, CANNOT be found amongst the corroded debris?

Answer: Human remains

Amazingly, there are no human remains. While there may have been some early on, they have long since been eaten away. According to research, it's likely the bodies were quickly swept away by changing currents, if not already eaten by more resilient sea life.

However, shoes have been found in small groups near the wreck. Originally thought to have fallen from boxes, later analysis shows that - because of their relative distance apart - they were likely evidence of long-lost remains.
7. Which of the following IS a valid reason for the Titanic's captain Smith speeding up in the reportedly icy area?

Answer: It was standard procedure of the time

Despite some conspiracy theories (one particularly amusing one even blaming the Jesuits for the sinking), it was actually standard for ships to speed through ice fields. According to their logic, passengers would have less time to see and take concern over such dangerous things (as icebergs) and, therefore, would have a more pleasant experience.
8. In Cameron's film, this man famously utters the line "Iceberg dead ahead!" before alerting the crew to the danger. Who is this man, the lookout in charge when the ship fatally hit the iceberg?

Answer: Frederick Fleet

Fleet survived the sinking, only to commit suicide after his wife died in the mid-sixties. Until the intervention and subsequent installation of a marker by the Titanic Historical Society (in 1994), Fleet's grave was unmarked.
9. Cameron wasn't the first director to produce a detailed film documenting the tragedy. One previous film, released in 1958, and directed by Roy Ward Baker, has become the quintessential Titanic enthusiast's theatrical re-enactment of the famous disaster. What is the name of this film?

Answer: A Night to Remember

The film is an adaptation of Sir Walter Lord's book of the same name. Due to the time period it was created in, though, it depicts the ship sinking in one piece.
10. What was the name of the finely crafted clock face at the top of the first class grand staircase on the Titanic?

Answer: Honour and Glory Crowning Time

The clock face was shown in Cameron's film, and an identical (or near-identical) version was placed upon Titanic's sister ship, the Olympic. Plans to paint the sculpture were announced, at which point the creator, Senan Molony, vowed never to work for White Star again.
