Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Morro Castle was constructed for runs between which two destinations?

Answer: Cuba and New York

The ship was built by the New York and Cuba Mail and Steamship Company. She and her sister ship, the SS Oriente, each weighed 11,520 gross tons, were 508 ft. long, and built to accomodate 489 passengers and 240 crew members and officiers. It took around 10 million dollars to build both ships.
2. The Morro Castle set sail on September 7, 1934, and that's when her troubles began. What happened?

Answer: The captain died

Captain Robert R. Willmott, well liked by his passengers, called the ship's doctor asking him for an enema (an injection of liquid for the intestine by way of the rear) as soon as possible. When he arrived, he found the captain fully clothed and half in, half out of the cabin's bathtub. Later, it was thought that he had been poisoned, but that was never proved.
3. The ship ran into a ________.

Answer: Hurricane

The new captain, First Officer William F. Warms, was unprepared to handle this (no one was killed, luckily). And more troubles were on their way ...
4. At 2:15 A.M., a fire started in the passengers' writing room in which 150 blankets, cleaned with flammable liquid, were kept next to the smokestack. The crew were unsuccessful in putting out the blaze. What was the main reason?

Answer: The ship was built under the idea that only six fire hydrants would be needed to fight any blaze

Poor Morro Castle! The captain died, a hurricane hit, and now a fire! The ship had about 42 of these hydrants, but because the Morro Castle was built under this assumption and the crew members turned them all on, the water pressure dropped to very low levels. But there was still one more misfortune to come.
5. As the fire spread, the ship headed for New York Harbor, 40 miles away, even though the the coastline of Florida was considerably closer.

Answer: False

Warms insisted on New York even though the coastline of New Jersey was only EIGHT miles away! And also he didn't send an SOS for some strange reason.
6. The captain never sent a distress signal.

Answer: True

This task was finally done by radio operator George Rogers.
7. The ship beached at Asbury Park, New Jersey, and the remaining passengers were saved. The captain was charged with negligence and sentenced to two years in prison, but his sentence was overturned. How may days did he serve?

Answer: 0

The radio operator did not fare as well as the captain.
8. George Rogers, the radio operator, was suspected of poisoning the captain and of having set fire to the ship. He was senteced to eight years in prison.

Answer: False

He was never convicted of wrong doing on the Morro Castle, but he was convicted of murdering two of his neighbors with a hammer.
9. What was the total number of deaths from this disaster at sea?

Answer: 133

Though my source says 133 people died, it mentions that other sources may give other numbers like 125, 134, and 137. Most of the deaths are attributed to either burning or drowning.
10. Though it was all over, the Morro Castle remained beached and it turned into a small tourist attraction. It was finally towed away and sold for scrap on what date?

Answer: March 14, 1935

Locals actually charged tourists to look at the charred remains of the Morro Castle as it floated in Asbury Park. Thank you for playing my quiz!
