As railroads grew in South Carolina in the late 19th century, Spartanburg was located at the intersection of many tracks and quickly became a railroad hub. At one point, up to 90 trains passed through or stopped in Hub City. Now it is the crossroads for Interstate 26 and Interstate 85.

Surrentum is the latin name for Sorrento, in Italy. Sorrento is famous for its production of Limoncello. So now I know why ArlingtonVA wanted to go there!

The Rockefeller Center in New York was declared a "National Historic Landmark" in 1987. New York is also home to the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, as well as the New York Botanical Gardens in the Bronx. The Bronx is one of the five boroughs of New York, the others being Manhattan, Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn.

The capital of the Bahamas is Nassau. Nassau was formerly known as Charles Town, and was burnt down by the Spanish, to be rebuilt as Nassau in 1695.
Nassau was occupied briefly during the American War of Independence by American troops.

Answer: Auschwitz

Prehaps the most well-known German-run concentration camp from the Second World War was Auschwitz. After it was liberated by the Allies in 1945 it was preserved as a memorial to those who perished there. Bergen-Belsen, Dachau, and Ravensbrück, were all concentration camps in Germany, with the latter being a camp specifically for women.

The Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan ordered the construction of the Taj Mahal as a memorial to his wife Mumtâz Mahal, who died giving birth to their fourteenth child Gauhara Begum. Construction of the Taj Mahal began in 1632 and completed around 1853. The Mausoleum is now a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Jahanara Begum Sahib was the eldest daughter of Shah Jahan and Mumtâz Mahal.

Answer: The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon was carved by the Colorado River, and is 277 miles long, and 1 mile deep. The Pueblo Native Americans saw the grand Canyon as a holy site and made pilgrimages to it.

Cheddar Gorge is in Somerset, England, and is the site where what was then Britain's oldest complete human skeleton, Cheddar Man, was found in 1903.

Samariá Gorge is on the Greek Island of Crete, and the Saklikent Gorge is found in Turkey, in the Antalya province.

Answer: Dublin

The English name Dublin comes from the Irish for "black pool." Dublin is situated at the mouth of the River Liffey, on the east of the country. Its modern name Baile Átha Cliath means "town of the hurdled ford." Dublin is also the home of Guinness, the stout which was first brewed at St. James's Gate in 1759.

The Tsavo National Park is split into the eastern and western areas, divided by a railway and the A109 road. The National Park is popular, as it contains the Lugard Falls and the Aruba Dam.

Astir is off to visit the Parthenon, a temple in the Athenian Acropolis, dedicated to the greek Goddess Athena, who was considered the protector of people in Athens.Athena is the Goddess of war, wisdom and justice.

The Colosseum is in Italy, as is the Leaning Tower of Pisa. Ampitheatures were built both by the Greeks and the Romans, although they were not used as temples.

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust site at Caerlaverock is a wetland nature reserve in Scotland, to the south of Dumfries, famous for its flocks of barnacle geese. Caerlaverock is special for non-ornithological reasons as well, as it is home to one of only two UK populations of the Horseshoe Shrimp, known as the "living fossil."

Answer: Ghana

Lake Volta lies completely within Ghana, on the west coast of Africa. The lake is formed by the Akosombo Dam, which was completed in 1965. Although many people had to be relocated because of the dam, it provides electricity for much of the country. There is a National Park, called the Digya National Park of Ghana, on part of the western side of the lake.

The Crown Jewels have been kept at the Tower of London after they were stolen from Westminster Abbey in 1303. They are protected by guards, who stand guard outside the Jewel House. The Queen Victoria Pub, Albert Square, is seen as part of English culture, as it is part of the soap "Eastenders."

Tuscany attracts visitors for many reasons. Whilst the food and wine is attractive to some, others visit Tuscany for its art, as well as its attractive countryside. Scottishrose44 will have lots of fun exploring Tuscan cuisine, through cooking classes and by sampling the local cuisine.

Rotorua is known for its hot mud pools and geysers, and attracts tourists from abroad as well as from within New Zealand. Due to the sulphur given off from the geothermal activity Rotorua has gained the nickname Sulphur City.

Taupo comes from the Maori for "The great cloak of Tia." Tia was the name of the person who discovered the lake.
