Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's get to know one another better. The Mackinac Bridge seems so formal. I have another name too. What other name(s) do I have?

Answer: all of these

I am nicknamed Big Mac and Mighty Mac due to my size and Mac is short for Mackinac (pronounced Mackinaw). My nickname Troll Turnpike comes from those who live in the Upper Peninsula. They jokingly call the Lower Peninsulans trolls because they live below me.
2. I am one of the longest suspension bridges in the world. What is my total length?

Answer: 26,372 feet

Impressive isn't it? This is about 5 miles or 8,038 meters. Additionally, I am 522 feet tall (168.25 meters).
3. I feel I can trust you with some personal information. I don't share this with everyone. How much do you think I weigh?

Answer: 1,024,500 tons

This is 929,410,766 kg. Do you think I look fat? Never mind, don't answer that!
4. There was a man whom I will always think of fondly. Some people even call him the "Father of the Mackinac Bridge". Now this is NOT the man who designed me. I am thinking of the man who was instrumental in my construction. What was his name?

Answer: Prentiss M. Brown

Prentiss M. Brown (1889-1973) was chairman of the Michigan Mackinaw Bridge Authority. He was also a former US senator. Plans for me fell through several times. Mr. Brown resurrected the plans many times and pushed until I was built. The other names are fictional.
5. Thoughts for my construction began in the 1930s. I didn't become open to traffic until much later. What date did the first car cross over me?

Answer: November 1, 1957

The first car that crossed me was a dark green 1951 Chevrolet Styleline Deluxe owned by Albert Carter. This car is on display at the Van Andel Museum Center.
6. My first birthday celebration sure was special. There were eighty-three Oldsmobile convertibles carrying some very special cargo. Who were they carrying?

Answer: beauty queens from each county in Michigan

All of the convertibles were white.
7. Since I am a bridge, you might think I remain stationary. My deck can actually fluctuate quite a bit. From my center span, how far can I move?

Answer: right or left as much as 35 feet!

Because I am a suspension bridge, I move to accommodate high winds, weight fluctuations and temperature changes.
8. I don't intend to be intimidating, but to some drivers I guess I am. The Mackinac Bridge Authority offers what program for those who are too uncomfortable to drive across me themselves?

Answer: Drivers Assistance Program

If you want someone else to drive your car across me this is what you do. If traveling northbound, at the south end there is a phone. If you are traveling southbound, just ask the fare collector and I am sure they will help you.
9. I have been witness to some sad events. Some tragic accidents did occur during my construction. How many people perished trying to bring me to life?

Answer: 5 men

Frank Pepper died September 16, 1954.
James R. LeSarge died October 10, 1954.
Albert Abbott died October 25, 1954.
Jack C. Baker died June 6, 1956.
Robert Koppen died June 6, 1956.
In May 2004, a special plaque was presented to the surviving family members. In the Clare Welcome Center, there is a tribute to honor those who have died while building and maintaining Michigan bridges and roads. Thank you to all who have given so much.
10. Sometimes, I need a break from all this traffic! Every year, two of my lanes get closed to vehicle traffic for the Mackinac Bridge Walk. Around what holiday does this occur?

Answer: Labor Day
