Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the flag of the Byzantine Empire. It consists of a tetragrammic cross, with four capital beta letters "B". What do those betas stand for?

Answer: King of the Kings aid the Emperor

The phrase comes from the Greek language. Although there are some other interpretations offered, none of these is represented by the incorrect answers. The flag was used by the last Byzantine dynasty, the Palaiologos dynasty. Another known symbol of the Byzantine Empire is the double-headed eagle.
2. Although the Roman Empire never had an official flag, the Roman Legions marched and fought under the standard shown in the photo. As you see, it is a red cloth with the golden letters "SPQR" encircled by a laurel wreath. What do the letters "SPQR" stand for?

Answer: The Senate and the People of Rome

The phrase comes from Latin. It is unknown when it was first used as a military symbol, but it probably originates in the late Roman Republic. The City of Rome also incorporates the latters in its symbol.
3. This flag was used by a Latin American country or rather, an empire, lasting from 1828 to 1889, with Pedro II as its last ruler, deposed in 1889 by a coup d'état. After the fall of the empire, the flag ceased to represent the country. About which country are we talking?

Answer: Brazil

The flag is almost identical to the modern Brazilian flag. The only difference is the fact that, in the center of the imperial flag the imperial coat of arms is depicted, instead of the globe and the stars.
4. Today, the swastika is remembered as the symbol of Nazism and Adolf Hitler. Yet, before its adoption as a Nazi symbol, the swastika was viewed positively as a symbol of good luck in many cultures. The word "swastika" is derived from Sanskrit and there is another name for the symbol, based on its appearance. Which one?

Answer: Gammadion cross

The term "Gammadion cross" was applied to the swastika symbol because it resembles four Greek gamma letters attached to each other. Its usage as a symbol of good luck can be found to most cultures of the Antiquity with its popularity high until it was claimed by the Nazis as their symbol.
5. This is the flag of the Austrian Empire. It was used from 1804 to 1867, when the Austrian Empire and the Kingdom of Hungary formed Austria-Hungary. Afterwards, the former flag of the Austrian Empire was the symbol of only a subdivision of Austria-Hungary. Which one?

Answer: Cisleithania

The flag was also used to denote the Kingdom of Hungary, which was in fact a separate monarchy within the Austrian Empire. Cisleithania was one of the three subdivisions of Austria-Hungary. The other two incorrect answers were real subdivisions of the same regime but used different symbols.
6. This is the flag of the Second Mexican Empire. It was flown from 1864 to 1867. The Empire was very short-lived, with only one monarch. Who was he?

Answer: Maximilian I

Maximilian I is also known as "Maximiliano". He was backed up in his effort to establish himself by Napoleon III of France. He is a controversial figure. Some historians condemn him for supporting the French intervention, while others say that his reforms during his brief reign were very positive and benefited Mexico as a country.
7. This is the flag of a realm in Northern Italy which was established in the Middle Ages and continued existing until late 18th century. About which realm am I speaking?

Answer: Republic of Venice

The Republic of Venice was one of the most influential regimes in medieval history. Its main symbol, the lion, is represented in the flag, too. The ruler of the Republic of Venice was named the Doge. After Napoleon's campaign in Italy and the Treaty of Campo Formio, the Austrian Empire annexed most part of the Republic of Venice.
8. This is the flag of the German Empire. It was used from 1871 until 1918 and the end of World War One. Three were the sovereigns of this Empire. The first and the last were Wilhelm I and II, respectively, but who governed in the interim between the two Wilhelms?

Answer: Frederick III

Frederick III's reign lasted for only 99 days in the year 1888, known as the "Year of Three Emperors" in German history. Frederick III's liberal political agenda was opposite to the Conservative policies followed by the German Empire. After Frederick III's death, Wilhelm II's reckless foreign policy and militarism established a rivalry between the German Empire and the other European powers, most notably France and the United Kingdom.
9. This is the flag used by the last dynasty of Chinese emperors, flown from 1862 to 1890, later replaced by another version. What was the name of the dynasty that used this flag?

Answer: Qing

Although the Qing dynasty had come to power in 1644, it never used a flag until 1862. During the Qing dynasty's reign, the territorial base for today's China was formed. The days of the Qing dynasty ended in 1912, when Emperor Puyi abdicated in favor of the newly proclaimed Provisional Government of the Republic of China.
10. This is the flag of the Soviet Union. As all the Soviet Republic flags, it depicts the typical communist symbol of the hammer and sickle. Yet, Vladimir Lenin and other Soviet leaders initially considered adding another symbol in the flag, before Lenin decided it was too aggressive. Which one?

Answer: A sword

The hammer and sickle are perhaps the most known Communist symbols. They represent friendly relationships between the industrial laborers (the hammer) and agrarian peasants (the sickle). Even after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, both the symbol and the Soviet flag are the chief representatives of pro-Communist political sidings.
