Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First held in 1997, the annual festival that takes place in the town of Ledbury, Herefordshire, is a celebration of what?

Answer: Poetry

The Ledbury Poetry Festival is the largest festival of poetry in UK and lasts for ten days, featuring live readings, competitions, workshops and open mic events. Many renowned poets from around the world have appeared at the festival including Benjamin Zephaniah, Patience Agbabi, Mark Doty and Fadhil Al Azzawi.
2. Ashland, Oregon is home to a festival which has been running since 1935. Which literary great is celebrated here?

Answer: William Shakespeare

The Oregon Shakespeare Festival has run each year since 1935, apart from during WWII, and has in that time seen over 20 million visitors. The repertory company which stages the festival have performed all of Shakespeare's 37 plays in a total of 312 different productions.

In 1935, just two plays were performed, "The Merchant Of Venice" and "Twelfth Night", while in 2018, they performed "Romeo And Juliet", "Love's Labour's Lost", "Othello" and "Henry V."
3. The Toronto International Film Festival began in 1976 and introduced the popular People's Choice Award in 1978. Which movie, directed by Claudia Weill, was the first recipient of this award?

Answer: Girlfriends

The first festival attracted 35,000 people and it has grown to such an extent that it now attracts almost half a million visitors each year. Several movies, such as "American Beauty"(1999), "Black Swan"(2010) and "127 Hours"(2010) held their North American premiere at the festival and it is estimated to boost the local economy by almost $200 million per year.
4. In its 14th year in 2018, what is celebrated at the annual festival held in Lowville, New York?

Answer: Cream Cheese

My first thought is why New York? Surely Philadelphia would be a much more apt setting; but that aside it would seem that there is nothing that the good people of Lowville can't do with cream cheese. Events on offer (apart from the recipe competitions) include sculpting with cream cheese, cream cheese bingo, cream cheese bowling, and painting murals with cream cheese as well as cream cheese eating competitions.
5. The Tunarama annual festival dates back to 1962 and is home to the famous "tuna toss". Which country is home to this unique event?

Answer: Australia

The festival started as a local event celebrating the tuna industry of Port Lincoln, South Australia, but since the tuna toss was added to the programme in 1979, it has become a national attraction, with even a few international visitors. Although the tuna used in the toss used to be actual fish, nowadays a plastic replica is used to avoid wasting too many of this valuable commodity.

In 1998, former Olympic hammer thrower Sean Carlin tossed his tuna a record 37.23 metres (122 feet) and the event hasn't been without controversy as in 1989, a female spectator was awarded A$35,000 in compensation after being hit by an eight kilogram (17.6 lb) flying frozen tuna.

Other events held at the five day festival include watermelon eating, one handed prawn peeling, keg rolling and best beach body competitions.
6. Just before Christmas, the Mexican city of Oaxaca hold a festival which involves carving vegetables to create displays and whole scenes. Which vegetable is honoured at this festival?

Answer: Radish

Night of the Radishes (Noche de Rábanos) is an annual event dating back to 1897 in which whole displays, often depicting Oaxacan history or everyday life, are created by carving thousands of radishes. The festival is extremely popular, but a word of warning if you are planning a visit. Be prepared for long queues as the works of radish art can only be displayed for a limited time due to the vegetable's tendency to quickly wilt and go floppy once cut.
7. A UK festival held annually in the town of Ottery St. Mary in Devon, involves men running through the town at night carrying which item on their shoulders?

Answer: A Burning Barrel Of Tar

Nobody is quite sure how the tradition, which dates back many centuries, started. There are theories it began after the Gunpowder Plot of 1605 or it was a way of warning townspeople of the arrival of the Spanish Armada, or even that the origins lie in medieval cottage fumigation, but however it started, the objective nowadays is pretty clear. Hoist the burning barrel on your shoulders (wearing protective clothing obviously) and run.

When you can bear the heat no more, pass the barrel on to the next willing participant. Doesn't sound like an event I'd like to take part in, but each year the festival raises thousands of pounds for local charities.
8. "El Colacho" is a Spanish festival in which men from the area surrounding the village of Castrillo de Murcia jump over certain items. What do these men jump over?

Answer: Babies

This is a week long festival dating back to 1620 to celebrate the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi, which culminates in the men, carrying whips and castanets and dressed as the devil, jumping over all the babies born in the last year. The babies are placed in small groups on mattresses in the street at regular intervals and the traditional belief is that having the devil leap over the baby will cleanse the child of original sin.

When Benedict was Pope, he advised the local priests to not get involved any more, as the view of the Vatican is that original sin can only be cleansed through baptism.
9. The village of Kettlewell in North Yorkshire is well known for appearing in the movie "Calendar Girls" (2003), but it is also known for its annual festival celebrating what?

Answer: Scarecrows

The festival started life as a one-off event to raise funds for the local school in 1994, but the response was amazing as over 100 scarecrows appeared in every available space in the village. This enthusiasm meant it became an annual event and the festival now runs for nine days each year with the scarecrows getting more and more ambitious.

In recent years, visitors have been treated to Elvis Presley, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Gru (complete with Minions), Sherlock Holmes and giant giraffes.

The festival still raises funds for the school but is so successful, it can now also help support other local needs too.
10. The Guisachan Gathering takes place each year in Scotland and is a festival dedicated to which breed of dog?

Answer: Golden Retriever

If you are a fan of the "goldie" then this is the place to go. Held annually at the birthplace of the breed, Guisachan House in Inverness-shire, this festival has been taking place since 2006 and attracts hundreds of golden retrievers (with their owners) each year, from puppies to young at heart dogs. The three day festival involves a lot of time with the dogs running off leash together in the grounds of the house as well as fun competitions and dog shows.
