Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Third Class passengers the Andersson family were travelling on the Titanic with their five children, aged between eleven and two. Did they have any other relatives who were also on board?

Answer: Yes

Originally from Sweden, Anders and Alfrida Andersson (both 39) boarded Titanic as Third Class passengers in Southampton, England, with their five children: Sigrid (11), Ingeborg (9), Ebba (6), Sigvard (4) and Ellis (2). Their destination: Winnipeg Manitoba, Canada.

Also in Third Class, though travelling separately, was Mrs Andersson's sister, Anna Danbom (28), her husband, Ernst (34) and their four-month-old son, Gilbert. They lived in Stanton, Iowa, and had convinced the Anderssons to emigrate to the US.

Both entire families perished. Ernst Danbom's body was eventually recovered by the cable ship Mackay-Bennett and he was buried in Stanton. The bodies of his wife, son and other relatives, if recovered, were never identified.
2. Why did Titanic passengers Mrs Panula and her five sons, aged between sixteen and one, want to emigrate to Pennsylvania, USA?

Answer: To join their husband and father

Originally from Finland, Maija Panula(41) boarded Titanic in Southampton, England, with her five sons, Ernesti (16), Jaako (14), Juha (7), Urho (2) and Eino (1). Their destination: Coal Centre, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, USA, to join their husband and father, John. Also travelling with them was their neighbour's daughter, Susanna Riihivuori (22).

The entire family, along with Miss Riihivuori, perished. Their bodies, if recovered, were never identified. Sadly, due to a language barrier, it took a whole week before Mr Panula was informed of the deaths of his wife and children.
3. From which country did Second Class passengers the Collyer family, with their daughter aged eight, originally come?

Answer: England

Charlotte and Harvey Collyer (both 31), along with their daughter, Marjorie (8), boarded Titanic as Second Class passengers in Southampton, England. Their destination was Payette Valley, Idaho, USA, where friends of the family had a successful fruit farm.

Majorie and her mother were rescued in Lifeboat Fourteen, but Harvey perished. His body, if recovered, was never identified. Majorie died on February 26th, 1965, aged 61.
4. Mrs Palsson and her four children, aged between eight and two, survived. True or false?

Answer: False

Originally from Sweden, Alma Palsson (29) boarded Titanic as a Third Class passenger in Southampton, England, with her four children, Torborg (8) Paul (6), Stina (3) and Gosta (2). Their destination: Chicago, Illinois, USA, to join their husband and father, Nils, who had gained employment as a tram conductor.

The entire family perished. Alma's body was eventually recovered by the cable ship, Mackay-Bennett. She was buried at Fairview Lawn Cemetery, Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada, on May 8th, 1912. The bodies of her children, if recovered, were never identified.

William and Lucile Carter (both 36) boarded Titanic as First Class passengers in Southampton, England, with their two children, William (11) and Lucile (14). Their destination: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. Travelling with them was Mrs Carter's maid, Auguste Serreplan (30), Mr Carter's manservant, Alexander Cairns (28) and, in Second Class, Mr Carter's chauffer, Charles Aldworth (20).

The family and Miss Serreplan were rescued in Lifeboat Four, but were forced to leave their dog behind. Mr Cairns and Mr Aldworth perished. Their bodies, if recovered, were never identified.

William died on January 28th, 1985, aged 84. He was buried at West Laurel Hill Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Pennsylvania, USA.

Their destination: New York City, New York, USA, to join their husband and father. With them was Adele Najib (15), who was travelling to the US to get married.

The family and Miss Najib were recued in Collapsible Lifeboat C.

Eugenie died from meningitis on August 30th, 1912. She was buried at Calvary Cemetery, New York, USA.
7. Which town or city did the O'Dell family, with their son, aged eleven, list as being their final destination?

Answer: Queenstown, Ireland

Not everyone who boarded Titanic were heading for America. Thirty-two were cross-channel passengers whose journeys, fortunately for them, ended at either Cherbourg, France, or Queenstown, Ireland.

Eleven-year-old Jack O'Dell disembarked at Queenstown, with his mother, Lily, and her sister-in-law, Kate.

Edvin, Lillian and their mother were rescued in Lifeboat Fifteen. Carl, his older brothers and their father perished.

Mr Asplund's body was recovered by the cable ship, Mackay-Bennett. He was buried in the Old Swedish Cemetery, Worcester, Massachusetts, USA. The bodies of his sons, if recovered, were never identified.

Sadly, Mr Peacock would never meet his new son as Edith and both children perished. Their bodies, if recovered, were never identified.
