Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following state flags was adopted before it was admitted to the Union?

Answer: Hawaii

It was adopted in 1894, 65 years before it became a state. Texas' flag was also adopted (1839) before it joined the Union (1845).
2. What state flag is the only one with a green background?

Answer: Washington

It's also the only flag with a picture of a President on it -- George Washington, of course.
3. What state flag is not rectangular in shape?

Answer: Ohio

It is based on the pennon used by the Cavalry between 1862 and 1865 and was designed by John Eisenmann.
4. How many current state flags were adopted in the 19th Century?

Answer: 11

Tricky! Florida's was adopted in 1900, which was still in the 19th Century. Others include Alabama, Connecticut, Hawaii, Mississippi, New Jersey, North Carolina, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Virginia.
5. How many current state flags were adopted in the 18th Century?

Answer: 0

There may have been state flags in the past designed then, but none are the current state flags.
6. How many current state flags were adopted in the 20th Century?

Answer: 39

7. Many state flags have stars on them, mostly symbolic. But three flags' stars represent specific stars in the nighttime sky. Which three states?

Answer: Maine, Alaska and Minnesota

Maine's has a star above the state seal representing the North Star, because it was the northernmost state of the Union when it was admitted. Alaska's flag has the stars of Ursa Major (Big Dipper) as well as the North Star, said to represent the future state of Alaska and its far northerly position. Alaska's flag was designed by a 13-year-old orphan, Benny Benson. (Arguably, Arizona star represents the Sun, but I asked for nighttime sky stars.)
8. Nine states have 13 of something on their flags, representative of the original 13 states. Four of them use stars, but five use other symbols. Name one of those five.

Answer: North Dakota

Arizona's flag has 13 rays emanating from the star in the center.

Four other states flags - North Dakota, Missouri, Illinois, and Wisconsin - have 13 stripes on an eagle's shield.
9. How many state flags are only red, white, and blue?

Answer: 6

This one was tricky. Some have mostly red, white, and blue, but then add their state seal, which has other colors in it (e.g. Wyoming). The states that are strictly red, white, and blue are Arkansas, Hawaii, Mississippi, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas. (I have recently added Arkansas, as someone (a Brit, no less) has pointed out that I had forgot it. So those that previously answered '6' were right and '5' were wrong. I'm sorry that I can't amend the scores, but it's right now.)
10. How many states' flags have a bear or bears on them?

Answer: 2

California has one bear. Missouri has two.
