The blue symbolizes loyalty and devotion, the shield stands for protection, and the crossed olive branch and pipe of peace symbolize the desire for peace.
It was adapted on 9th May 1941.

The so-called "Betsy Ross" design features 13 white stars (representing the original 13 colonies), arranged in a circle on a blue background, plus the common red and white stripes.

Popular legend states that the flag was sewn by Betsy Ross to a design by George Washington. However, modern research has shown this to have no basis in historical fact, and is largely a legend put about by her descendants.
