Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At which station do I get off to go to Birmingham Airport and the NEC?

Answer: Birmingham International

Attached to the NEC, Birmingham International is about half a mile from the airport. The two use to be connected by one of the worlds first Maglev railways in passenger service, albeit at a low speed, the same technology is currently being used to provide high speed rail services in China.

In the mid-nineties the service was stopped because of the high cost and lack of spare parts and replaced by a bus service. Recently this has been replaced by a new rail link using a chain-driven automated train adapted from the existing Maglev tracks.
2. Which station is nearest to Cadbury World?

Answer: Bournville

Bournville station is next to the Birmingham & Worcester Canal which is very near Cadbury World (in fact looking over the factory).
3. Which station is nearest to Villa Park?

Answer: Witton

Witton is actually nearer to Villa Park than Aston and therefore closer. You could get off at Aston and walk for 15 minutes or get off at Witton and walk for 5 minutes, although services to Aston are more frequent than Witton as the Cross-City line passes through. Bordesley rail station is near the ground of there city rivals, Birmingham City.
4. What about the nearest station to The West Brom Ground and is named after the stadium?

5. Which station is nearest to former site of the Rover Factory?

Answer: Longbridge

Longbridge station is right next to the factory, the current station was built in 1978 although an earlier station existed just off the Bristol Road at the centre of the old factory site, much of the line from Halesowen to a junction just south of the new Longbridge station is no longer there, although the part of the railway through the old factory as of 2006 is still there.
6. Which of these is not a station in Sutton Coldfield?

Answer: Chester Road

Chester Road is just south of Sutton Coldfield.

8. True or False, Smethwick Rolfe Street was built in 1995 to provide an interchange between local services on the West Coast Main Line and the Jewellery Line which runs from Snow Hill station and then south towards Stourbridge?

Answer: False

9. At the southern end of the Cross-City line, where do local services terminate?

Answer: Redditch and Longbridge

Most trains terminate at Longbridge, the most last stop in Birmingham if you are heading south. Half hourly services continue along the main line to Barnt Green before leaving the line and down a single tracked section stopping at Alvechurch and then Redditch. There are plans to build a passing loop at Alvechurch to terminate more trains at Redditch.
10. Which station is the northernmost on the Cross-City line?

Answer: Lichfield Trent Valley

Lichfield City is the main station in Lichfield and many services terminate here and also at Blake Street, the most northernly station within the West Midlands county. Lichfield Trent Valley is built on two levels with the Trent Valley line (part of the West Coast Main Line) on the bottom and the Cross-City line above.

13. Which of the following is the nearest station to the Black Country Museum?

Answer: Sandwell & Dudley

14. The train from Birmingham New Street to Droitwich Spa stops at four stops before Droitwich. Which are they?

Answer: Five Ways, University, Barnt Green, Bromsgrove
