In 1970, Arafat planned an uprising against the Jordanian royal family.
King Hussein tried to reach an understanding and offered Arafat the role of prime minister. Arafat refused as the kingdom isn't big enough for both him and Hussein and one of them had to go. In the end, it was Arafat who lost and had to escape to Lebanon. One of the results of this conflict was that King Hussein massacred thousands of Palestinians in what is known as the "Black September."

The operation, "Peace for the Galilee," which was planned for only three days, got entangled, and turned into a full scale war which ended only in 1985, as the leaders of the PLO surrendered and left on a plane to Tunis.
