The Blood in the Water match was the 1956 Olympic water polo seimfinal match between Hungary and Russia that occurred at the time of the uprising of the Hungarian people against Russia. The Hungarians were the returning champion, and obviously bad blood existed between the nations that spilled over into the Olympic pool.
In the final minutes of the match the Hungarians had a 4-0 lead and Russian player Valentin Prokopov attacked Ervin Zador of Hungary, opening a significant head wound. Spectators left their seats to reach the pool, and the officials stopped the match and awarded the victory to Hungary. Hungary wnet on to win the finals over Yugoslavia.
The Hungarian player Zador is credited with coining the phrase Bllod in the Water, although reports of the water turning red with blood are regarded as an exaggeration.
