Penrith Panthers were known as the "Chocolate Soldiers" due to taking on a brown and white uniform after their original blue and white colours were deemed to be too close to other teams. Renowned radio commentator Frank Hyde said of them, "these chocolate soldiers from out west - they don't melt!" The name stuck, until 1964 when a public competition to design a logo for them was won with a picture of a Panther.

Royce Simmons is a former rugby league footballer who played as a hooker for the Penrith Panthers. He joined the Penrith Panthers in 1981 and played with them until 1992, leading the team as captain during the 1991 Grand Final. Simmons played over 250 first-grade games for the Panthers and was a key player in their first ever premiership win during the 1991 season. He also represented New South Wales and played for the Australian national team. Simmons is widely considered as one of the greatest players to have played for the Penrith Panthers and his contribution to the team's success has been enormous.

Mick Cronin, a former professional rugby league footballer from Australia, spent his entire career playing for the Parramatta Eels, the team he signed with in 1977. Over his seventeen seasons with the team, he became one of the greatest players in their history, scoring 1,972 points in first-grade matches and leading the team to four Grand Final victories. In recognition of his contributions to the team, Cronin was awarded the Parramatta Eels Player of the Year Award three times, and in 1986, was inducted into the club's Hall of Fame. Today, Cronin is revered not only by Parramatta fans but by rugby league fans across the country as one of the standout players of his generation.
