The original was a play written by Neil Simon. The TV show debuted in September 1970 on the ABC network and was meant to be a lead-in for "The Odd Couple" (another Simon play). While "The Odd Couple" proved to be a more popular TV show, "Barefoot in the Park" was beset with problems, most centering on Mitchell, and was cancelled in January 1971. Along with Mitchell, it featured Tracy Reed as wife Corie and Thelma Carpenter as Corie's mother.
