Answer: Walmington-On-Sea
Though fictional, Walmington-On-Sea is based in Sussex, England. The majority of scenes were shot in Norfolk and a museum paying homage to the series opened at Thetford Guildhall, which was also used as the Town Hall in the series.
Clacton, and Southend are both real towns on the South coast of England whilst Bridlington is a real coastal resort town in Yorkshire, northern England.

Answer: Local Defence Volunteers (later the Home Guard)
The Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden, made a speech in May 1940 which called for every under age male and every other male excluded from military service for whatever reason to form a local defence force; and virtually every male responded. At its peak the total number of men under arms in the Home Guard numbered around one and a half million men. Although referred to as 'Dad's Army' the vast majority of its members during the war years were of a surprisingly young age. The organisation was originally known as the 'LDV' or 'Local Defence Volunteers' and was renamed, at the insistence of Prime Minister Winston Churchill, the 'Home Guard' on the 22nd of July 1940. First recruits were volunteers but in 1942 legislation was passed which introduced compulsory service in the Home Guard. After the invasion of northern Europe following 'D' Day, the Home Guard became surplus to requirements and were stood down in December 1944 with disbandment following a year later.

Answer: Captain Mainwaring
Mainwaring would often say this to Private Pike on numerous occasions, usually when Pike had suggested a bad idea or whenever something Pike did humiliated Captain Mainwaring, or got him into trouble. As Pike was Mainwaring's clerk at his bank, he would say this phrase often, and few episodes would go by when Mainwaring wouldn't say those three words to the young Pike. He first said this in the very first episode of Dad's Army, "The Man And The Hour".

The signature tune of 'Dad's Army' written by Jimmy Perry was the final recording to be made by Wartime Comic and former Crazy Gang member Bud Flanagan in early 1968. The song was frequently mistaken for a genuine wartime song by the show's viewers, although it hadn't actually been written until Jimmy Perry was developing the idea for his new television series.

Sergeant is incorrect - this role is John Le Mesurier as Sgt Arthur Wilson.
Captain is incorrect - this role is Arthur Lowe as Captain Mainwaring.
Private is incorrect - there were a number of Privates, though Jones was always a step behind, he still ranked above them!

Answer: David Croft and Jimmy Perry
This is an interesting piece of trivia. On the upper sleeve of the battle dress worn by the cast is a tactical or formation badge. This badge, which consists of the letters 'CP' over the figure '1' should, by all accounts, represent a military formation; in a similar way that the 'Screaming Eagle' badge on a US paratrooper's uniform represents the 101st Airborne Division, but it doesn't; what this badge actually represents are the initials of the writers surnames, Croft and Perry. BAFTA award winning writers David Croft and Jimmy Perry were one of the most successful writing partnerships of the last fifty years and penned some of the most popular BBC comedies including 'It Ain't Half Hot, Mum', 'Hi-de-Hi!' and 'You Rang M'Lord' in addition to 'Dad's Army'.
From Quiz: War is Hell! But Sometimes Hilarious - Dad's Army
Answer: Fraser
The dour Fraser would quite often say these words, or words quite similar, whenever the Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea found themselves trapped in a very bad situation, such as in the episode "Time On Our Hands", when the platoon were trapped at the top of the clock tower with a German parachutist. Fraser was very much portrayed as a stereotypically dour Scotsman throughout the show. Fraser was an undertaker, which only served to hammer home his reputation, and he would often delight in any sticky situations Mainwaring found himself in. This includes the time that the platoon found themselves trapped in the local pumping station underground (in "Asleep In The Deep"), with the water flowing into the room they found themselves in.

Answer: Walker
The answer is Walker. Private Joe Walker was the lovable yet cheeky guy, who could turn up late to parade but talk his way out of it.
He wouldn't always do things strictly by the book, but in a time of rationing, he knew who his friends were and pulled through for the troop on more than one occasion.
Unfortunately, James Beck died in 1973 following a fall at a charity event. This was part way through filming series six; it is a testament to "Dad's Army" and the fans that in fact the show went on for another three series, despite losing a character.
Incidentally, James Beck had also starred in the first two series of sitcom "Romany Jones" which ran from 1972. His character was written out and this continued for a further two series.
Beck was an established actor with previous roles in "Coronation Street" and "Dixon of Dock Green".
From Quiz: "Dad's Army" Trivia Test
Answer: Sergeant Wilson
Wilson was Captain Mainwaring's right-hand man at the bank and in the platoon. He would often interrupt Mainwaring with this phrase whenever Mainwaring suggested any idea, mostly ridiculous ideas. Wilson is portrayed more as a loyal servant, but a servant who wishes to exert as little physical work as possible. At times, it is clear that the platoon have a lot more respect for Wilson than Mainwaring. One use of the phrase can be found in the episode, "If The Cap Fits", when Mainwaring suggested handing over control of the platoon temporarily to Private Fraser.

From Quiz: "Dad's Army" Trivia Test
Answer: A coloured scarf
Private Pike, played by Ian Lavender, is the platoon 'mummy's boy' whose mother insists that he wears his scarf at all times. Private Pike's mother also insists that he doesn't use items such as public telephones and the like in case he catches something. This often leads to conflict between Captain Mainwaring and Sergeant Wilson which can be seen in the episode "The Lion has Phones" in which Captain Mainwaring attempts to instruct the platoon in the use of a public telephone box. It is Walmington-on-Sea's worst kept secret that Sergeant Wilson is, in fact, Private Pike's father and it is only Wilson himself, Pike and his mother who believe that it is, in fact, a secret!
From Quiz: War is Hell! But Sometimes Hilarious - Dad's Army
Answer: Godfrey
Another very loyal servant, Private Godfrey is a retired member of the Home Guard who specialises in First Aid matters. He is portrayed as an effective member of the platoon, but he has a bladder problem, which means that he frequently mentions having to be excused, and often makes comments about his problem throughout the programmes, particularly when the platoon have had a long day. Godfrey also often attends 'the clinic', and is the only main member of the platoon who is retired, even though Jones is older. In one episode, he was considered to be a 'conchie' in the First World War, but it later emerged that he had actually saved many lives in the War. An example of Godfrey saying this quote came in the episode, "The King Was In His Counting House", after a long night for the platoon counting money from Mainwaring's bank.
