Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What creature causes the most human deaths worldwide yearly?

Answer: Mosquito

The mosquito transmits malaria carrying parasites with its bite that kills hundreds of thousands of people yearly worldwide. This number is greater than the mortality rate inflicted by the three other possible answers combined.

2. Which nocturnal mammal has over 900 different species?

Answer: Bats

There are over 900 species of bats (some sources say that there are more than 1,100). This means that one out of every five mammalian species is a bat.

3. Wolves are the largest of the canine family, but which of these is the largest species of wolf?

Answer: Gray wolf

The gray wolf is the largest among the wolf species averaging 66-180 pounds and 3.9-6.6 feet. It averages almost 1 foot longer and about 20 pounds heavier than the tundra wolf (second largest species of wolf).

4. The fur of what beautiful predator of Asia and Africa is a very effective example of disruptive camouflage?

Answer: leopard

In disruptive coloration (or camouflage), strongly contrasting markings such as spots or stripes break up the outline of an animal's body to help it avoid detection. This distinctive form of camouflage is found both in predators (such as the leopard, the jaguar and other cat species that display bold, non-repeating markings) and potential prey (such as various bird species); it is also used on military vehicles, uniforms and other equipment.

The opposite of disruptive camouflage - in which an animal emphasizes its outlines as a form of warning - is called aposematism. Brown bears are not found in Africa, where the only native bear species died out in the 19th century.

5. When Martha died on September 1, 1914 in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was the last of her kind. What type of bird was she?

Answer: Passenger pigeon

The passenger pigeon was a bird native to North America. Passenger pigeons were so plentiful that at the beginning of the 19th century they may have been the most numerous species of bird in the world. They became extinct because of widespread hunting and habitat loss. What is unusual about the demise of the passenger pigeon is just how rapidly its extinction came about. Huge flocks of passenger pigeons were still common in the 1870s, and the bird was still hunted commercially.

But passenger pigeon populations declined rapidly in the last decades of the 19th century.

The last known passenger pigeon in the wild was killed on March 12, 1901 in Illinois. While small numbers survived in zoos and private aviaries, the birds did not breed well in captivity. Martha, the last known member of her species, died in the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914.

6. What bird also goes by the name "Pharaoh's chicken"?

Answer: Egyptian vulture

Sacred to the goddess Isis in ancient Egypt, another name for the Egyptian vulture is "Pharaoh's chicken". It is the smallest vulture that breeds in Europe. Notable for using pebbles to break eggs, they are now considered endangered due to poisoning from farming chemicals, electrocution by power lines, and illegal killing by poachers selling them as stuffed trophies.

7. What insects can forensic scientists utilise as an aid for helping to determine time of death of any body?

Answer: Blowflies

Estimated time of death can be unreliable after three days. Blowflies, charming little ghouls that they are, can detect rotting flesh for up to ten miles and will utilise them to begin their life cycle anew - so scientists use their knowledge of how long it takes for these insects to lay and hatch from bodies that are in various stages of decay to give a more accurate time of death. And now I'm going to be sick.

8. Which popular household pet is also a major part of the diet of humans in remote areas of the Andes?

Answer: guinea pig

Guinea piglets wean after one day. In fact, they lose their first (milk) teeth before they are born!

Question by player bluepeter46
9. The pelican belongs to which of these classes of vertebrates?

Answer: Aves

The word "Aves" means "birds" in Latin.

Question by player intelman
10. Which of these are widely considered to be the smartest birds?

Answer: crows

Sap suckers are real birds, but avian scientists agree that the Corvidae family, which includes crows, ravens, jays, and magpies, among others, are the brainiest. The common American Crow (Corvus brachyrhychos) may top the list. It has a brain to body mass ratio equal to apes and dolphins, slightly below humans.

Individual crows have been observed using tools. In one example, crows dropped nuts in road intersections so that cars would crush them open, then waited until the light turned red to retrieve the spoils.

They have the ability to recognize human faces, and to count.
