Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Greek dance

Answer: Ser tag quay

Although it is considered a typical Greek folk dance from long ago, the sirtaki was specially created for the 1964 movie "Zorba the Greek" starring Anthony Quinn and Alan Bates. The choreography of the sirtaki was based on the Cretan chain dance syrtos and the Byzantine hasapiko, combining slow dragging movements and fast hops.
As the tempo hastens gradually, the dance gets more difficult towards the end.
2. Set to music by an Armenian composer

Answer: Say bird ends

Aram Khatchaturian from Armenia composed the fast music for the classical ballet "Gayaneh", to a choreography of Nina Anisimova. A group of male ballet dancers perform the so-called sabre dance as a classical ballet (with numerous pirouettes), whilst holding a short blade (about 40 cm or 16 inches, as I estimate based upon some Youtube files) in each hand.
Whilst the original sabre dance and related sword dances were probably danced with real slashing weapons, security demands that nowadays performers use dull blades.
3. Made popular in the 1950s by Bill Haley, Elvis Presley and others

Answer: Roe car owl

Rock and roll was the dance that conquered the world in the 1950s. It started out as a fast partner dance with the woman typically wearing a petticoat, but as acrobatic routines became more and more demanding, the clothing for competition dancers nowadays is adapted to be rather tough and yet allowing free movement. (You wouldn't like to be the one dancer with the ripped skirt or pants).

The basic steps are short and more or less follow the rhythm slow - slow - quick - quick. But after mastering the basic forward steps, backsteps, side slides and turns, you need to train for the acrobatic moves: lifts, jumps, throws, flips, cartwheels...
4. Renaissance and baroque dance

Answer: Ali manned

The allemande is a renaissance and baroque dance for couples. It is a rather slow dance, with steps and small hops. A few turns come in to enliven the dance.
Hey, this is a dance I might master. It's a pity it is performed only a few times a year - the heydays are over since about 1750, and evidently I was born some years later.
5. Signature dance at the Moulin Rouge

Answer: Kink hen

The French can-can started as a dance for men only, but soon women took over the scene. A highly energetic dance that gained rapid popularity in the 1820s, it is more than 200 years later still the specialty of some Parisian nightclubs as the Moulin Rouge.

While men and women may perform the can-can as a solo dance, the best known choreography is a line of women only. Some movements are the high kick, the rond de jambe (swinging one foot back and forth above the other knee), the cartwheel, the split jump and the port d'armes (turning on one foot, whilst holding the other by the ankle above one's face).
6. Ukranian squatted dance

Answer: Hope heck

Hopak is a Ukrainian dance stemming from the Cossacks. Many of the steps are improvised, but in the concert version from the twentieth century onwards there are some recurring steps: high jump while spreading the legs, squatting passes and squatting kicks.
The trepak (Russian Cossack dance) is different in that it omits the typical squat manoeuvres.
7. Spanish dance introduced by nomad people

Answer: Flaming girl

The flamenco is a name for a great number of Spanish dances, at first performed by the nomads called Gitanos (and related to the Romani people). Typical elements of the flamenco dance are rapid small steps with stamping feet, while dancers accompany themselves singing and making music with clicking castanets.
Experts have identified over fifty different styles of flamenco, and most of these styles are typical of the region they originated in.
8. Argentinian and Uruguayan intangible cultural heritage

Answer: Ten gore

The tango is a partner dance invented near the Rio de la Plata, the river that separates Argentina from Uruguay. Although most people think of the tango as an exclusively Argentine dance, it is thus equally Uruguayan, and UNESCO has recognized it as an intangible cultural heritage for both countries likewise.
Tango is a dance with more gliding steps than the other dances mentioned in this quiz, and at competition level many dancers add a routine of waving a leg up and down around the partner's leg.
9. Maori war dance

Answer: Hat cat

The haka is best known as the introductory dance of the New Zealand rugby team the All Blacks. It was originally a Maori dance adapted to various occasions, such as welcoming an honoured guest, celebrating some holiday or inspiring fear to intruders. This last variation (the war dance) has been adopted by the New Zealand rugby team as a ritual before each international match, and thus has gained the most interest. The war haka consists of aggressive arm movements performed in a strong stance with the legs spread sideways (also known as the "horse stance"), and usually end with the provoking gesture of sticking one's tongue out.
10. Hawaiian dance

Answer: Who law

The hula is a traditional Hawaiian dance, originally performed to accompany the great oral epics of the Hawaiian culture.
But it evolved to a popular dance by young woman clothed in long flowing dresses (and in some male fantasies only in a straw skirt and a flower garland).
The main difference with other dances mentioned in this quiz is that hula dancers continuously sway their hips left to right and back, which gives a floating impression.
11. Highlight of the compositions by the family Strauss

Answer: Fin knee swills

Finally a dance I might try without breaking my leg. But my partner would better wear safety boots...
The waltz is a classical ballroom dance, and the Viennese family Strauss specialized in composing these lovely tunes such "Wiener Launen" (Johann Strauss Sr., better knowns for the "Radetzky March"), "An der schönen blauen Donau" (Johann Strauss Jr.), "Dorfschwalben aus Österreich" (Josef Strauss) and "Fesche Geister" (Eduard Strauss).
The Strauss family also composed several other highlights of classical music, such as polkas, marches, galops, quadrilles, operettas...
12. Tobago dance, inspired Chubby Checker

Answer: Lean bow

Chubby Checker is best known for introducing the twist in the first half of the 1960s. But if you take the twist to the summit, you're on your way to mastering the limbo as well - another dance for which Chubby Checker recorded some songs.
Limbo originated in Tobago and consists in dancing under a horizontal bar. The dancer may not touch the bar with any body part, and only the dancer's feet may touch the floor. So basically one shuffles towards the bar, gradually bending the knees and positioning the back as low as possible, to pass under the bar still dancing.
My cats would probably outdo me in dancing the limbo - if only they could understand the rules of the game.
13. Balinese sacred dance

Answer: Song young dead eerie

Sanghyang Dedari is a sacred dance from Bali (Indonesia), performed by two young girls in ceremonial dress. Its movements are inspired by entranced dancers and it is especially the hand movements that are important: they tell the story, as in most Balinese dances.
Sanghyang Dedari is one of the nine dances recognized by the UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
14. Brazilian dance

Answer: Some bar

The samba is a typical Brazilian dance, performed at major feasts (and best known as the dance performed at the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro) - but also at each victory of the Brazilian soccer team.

Samba steps (like the boogie-woogie) are little steps while constantly bending and stretching the knees. The rhythm is short - quick - short, and on the quick beat you don't put your heel down (that is only on the slow beat).
15. Malinese wedding dance

Answer: Sew new

The sunu is a typical wedding dance of the Mandinka people from Mali and Gambia. Dancers perform this energetic dance in pairs, raising their hands and stomping their feet. Musicians accompany the dance especially on percussion instruments, most notably the djembe.
Contrary to most other dances in this quiz, sunu dancers almost do not move from their starting position. It would be perfectly normal to dance the sunu on one single square floor tile with a side of 30cm (12 inch).
