Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This British television presenter is noted for his perma-tan, sharp suits, cheesy catch phrases such as "cheap as chips", and sincerity laid on with a trowel. Who is he?

Answer: David Dickinson

David Dickinson is of Armenian descent. Born to a single mother he was adopted by the Dickinsons. He did correspond with his biological mother when she was quite elderly but never met her. She never revealed the name of his father. He was an antiques dealer before finding television fame. He came to public attention on the BBC show "The Antiques Show". At the time, the 1980s, "Lovejoy" was a popular television show. This was about an antiques dealer and David Dickinson bore a strong resemblance to the main character, played by Ian McShane. From there he went on to present "Bargain Hunt" on BBC television. This was a lunchtime show which quickly gained a large following and made a star out of David Dickinson. Catch phrases such as "cheap as chips" for a bargain, or "can I call you girls?" to lady contestants no matter what their age, entered the national vocabulary.

He has used the same tailor for over 40 years, and his dress sense led to his nickname, The Duke.
2. This Icelandic singer is noted for her very individual dress sense, as well as often strange songs. Who is she?

Answer: Bjork

Everything about Bjork is eccentric from her taste in food (roast puffin) to her dress sense and even her music. She also espouses causes, in particular various liberation movements. This is perhaps not surprising given that her father was a union leader and her mother was also politically active.

She has been the centre of more than one controversy involving the press. In 1996 she attacked a female reporter at Bangkok Airport because, she said, she was trying to interview her son. In 2008 she was involved in a fracas with a reporter who was trying to cover her arrival at Auckland Airport.

Despite her constantly changing musical style she has a devoted fan base, and has won several awards. These include four BRIT awards and four MTV Music Video Awards.

She has been Grammy nominated 14 times.
3. Once best known as a sports presenter, who is the man who announced, in 1991, that he was the Son of the Godhead and predicted the end of the world?

Answer: David Icke

David Icke wanted to be a professional footballer, but rheumatoid arthritis prevented him from doing this. He became a newspaper sports reporter and eventually worked his way up to working for the BBC, often appearing on this main Saturday sports programme, "Grandstand".

His contract was terminated after he refused to pay his community charge. He became involved with the Green Party in the 1980s, mainly due to his interest in alternative medicine in a search for something to relieve his arthritis.

In 1991, after a psychic told him he had been put on earth to educate people, he made his Son of the Godhead announcement. He also started dressing entirely in turquoise because this gave him positive energy. He was much ridiculed for his public pronouncements, and an interview on the "Terry Wogan Show" led to him being laughed at in the streets.

He disappeared from public view for a while after this. He has since built a career as a lecturer and writer on conspiracy theories, his main theory being that of a Global Elite who secretly control everything.
4. Who was the celebrity cook who always had a glass or two of wine on hand, and cooked in very strange places, including on a fishing boat?

Answer: Keith Floyd

Keith Floyd's eccentric style of presentation made him popular with television viewers all over the world. He always cooked on location, always with a glass of wine in hand. He presented shows from fishing boats in rough seas, on top of hills in screaming gales and pouring rain, on beaches, or in the middle of a field.

The programmes had a certain chaotic feel to them and it always seemed more by luck than design that the food actually arrived at a cooked state on time. Although his shows and cook books were very successful he was not good with money and had several failed business ventures.

In 1996 things were so bad that he was declared bankrupt. From 2008 until his death in 2009 he ran a restaurant on the island of Phuket which drew many fans who fondly recalled his television programmes.
5. Noted for strange headgear and very strong views on just about everything, especially the place of women, who is the racing pundit that women love to hate?

Answer: John McCririck

John McCririck started his television career back in 1981 as a horse racing tipster and pundit. His eccentric style of dress, including a variety of hats, and his wild arm waving made him memorable if not popular. His name for his wife is The Booby, and he has frequently espoused the view that women should be seen and not heard, and are put on earth to serve men.

His appearance on "Celebrity Big Brother" in 2005 was memorable. Brigitte Nielsen branded him "foul and disgusting" and he called Caprice Bourett a "cash machine" saying that everything she did was for money.

The sight of him in less than white underpants was not attractive.
6. Noted for his weird stunts, which include being buried alive, encased in ice and suspended in a perspex box, who is the illusionist that some feel has crossed the line from eccentricity to near madness?

Answer: David Blaine

A skilled magician, David Blaine has also performed a number of endurance stunts. As well as the above he has also been electrocuted, been submerged in a tank of water for seven days and been attached to a spinning gyroscope for several hours. He has frequently gone without food and water for many days during these stunts.

When interviewed on television he has often given only one word answers and has seemed to be mentally somewhere else.
7. Which actor likes to take pictures of his feet and then tweet them for everyone to enjoy?

Answer: Danny DeVito

In the realms of eccentric behaviour this is a completely harmless little eccentricity. Danny DeVito has even named his feet Troll Foot. The television series "Taxi", which ran from 1978 to 1983, made him a star, and from there he went on to star in many films, mainly as a comic actor.

He has also produced several films including "Pulp Fiction" (1994). His directorial credits include "Throw Mamma From The Train" (1987) and "The War of the Roses" (1989).
8. Which comedian used his eccentric looking eyes to good advantage in various sketch shows, as well as in the film "Young Frankenstein"?

Answer: Marty Feldman

Marty Feldman's eyes were misaligned and protuberant, this was due to Graves Disease. He started his comedic career as a writer with Barry Took. Together they wrote shows such as "The Army Game" and "Round the Horne". His first televised appearances were on "At Last The 1948 Show" (1967) which also launched the careers of Graham Chapman and John Cleese.

He continued writing for various shows as well as having his own 1968 television show "Marty". He played Igor in "Young Frankenstein" (1974) opposite Gene Wilder, who wrote the part with Marty Feldman in mind. Throughout his career Marty Feldman made a point of using his eyes.

In "Young Frankenstein" there is even a line specifically referring to them.
9. Which British star of numerous radio comedies and "Carry On" films lived in small rented flats, and was obsessed with cleanliness and bowel movements?

Answer: Kenneth Williams

Kenneth Williams was one of Britain's greatest comedians. From "Hancock's Half Hour" to "Beyond Our Ken" and "Round The Horne" his distinctive voice and impeccable timing made him a big star on radio. He was also a stalwart of the "Carry On" films, appearing in over twenty of them.

He was popular on television chat shows as he was guaranteed to give a good interview, and he also appeared on stage and in revue shows. He was a very private man. Despite having plenty of money he preferred to live in small rented flats which were almost spartan in their furnishings.

He was obsessed with personal cleanliness and his bowel movements, which he recorded in his diaries and worried over constantly. After his death it was revealed that he kept daily diaries and the publication of these showed a very complex man, full of self loathing.

This was completely at odds with the public face of the comedian.
10. This television presenter of the 1980s became famous for a breathless style of speech whilst crawling through undergrowth looking for insects and other wildlife. He often looked wilder than the animals he was stalking. Can you name him?

Answer: David Bellamy

With his beard and fairly unkempt hair, David Bellamy was a popular presenter of wildlife programmes in the 1980s. His style was over enthusiastic, but very distinctive. He was however no real competition to David Attenborough. He has espoused various causes, being jailed in 1983 for blockading the Australian Franklin River project.

He stood for Parliament against the then Prime Minister John Major. Currently he campaigns against wind farms in rural areas. He has also stated that global warming is "poppycock", something which has not endeared him to other environmentalists.
