Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. For the first time in WSOP history parts of the Main Event were broadcast on a 30 minute delay and the final table was broadcast on a 15 minute delay. Who made the decision on what the delay would be and how it would be done?

Answer: Nevada Gaming Commission

The Nevada Gaming Commission was the final authority in how the 'live' broadcast would be conducted. The main concern of the commission was that the integrity of the game be maintained and that no player would gain an unfair advantage from the coverage.

During the first eight days of the tournament in July there were two tables that were featured on a 30 minute delay. Coverage was switched between the tables every 30 minutes so no one table had more coverage than the other. No hole cards were shown unless the hand was played beyond the flop and only after the conclusion of the hand. In November, the final table was broadcast on a 15 minute delay with no hole cards being shown until the completion of the hand.
2. Which player was the first player from the Czech Republic to make the final table of the Main Event and held the chip lead going into the final table?

Answer: Martin Staszko

Martin Staszko entered the final table with 40,175,000 chips or 19.5% of the chips in play. Staszko was the second oldest player at the final table at 35 years of age. Throughout play on Sunday he stayed relatively even but survived to be one of the final three and return on Tuesday to play for it all.

He entered Tuesday with 42,700,000 chips and was in third place. On the first hand, he and Ben Lamb, who had 55,400,000 chips, immediately got all the chips in the middle with Ben holding KhJh and Staszko holding pocket 7's. Staszko's 7's held up and Lamb was crippled. Lamb was eliminated a few hands later. Staszko finished second to Heinz after 119 hands of heads up play and earned $5,433,086.
3. Which player's fans sang "I can feel it coming in the air tonight" whenever he would win a hand?

Answer: Phil Collins

Phil Collins' fans would sing the lyrics from "In the Air Tonight" made famous by the singer Phil Collins in 1981. Phil entered the final table fourth in chips with 23,875,000 chips or 11.6% of the chips in play. Phil is a seasoned pro with over $3 million in online earnings and was considered one of the favorites to win it all.

He was eliminated in fifth place when his Ad7d failed to improve against Heinz's pocket 9's. He won $2,269,599.
4. Which player was the first player from Germany to make the final table of the Main Event?

Answer: Pius Heinz

Pius Heinz entered the final table in seventh place with 16,425,000 chips or 8% of the chips in play. Heinz ran hot at the final table and ended the day with the chip lead going into three handed play on Tuesday night. He had 107,825,000 chips or 52.4% of the chips in play. Lamb was knocked out very early on Tuesday night, leaving Heinz and Staszko to battle it out.

Heads up play lasted for 119 hands with the lead changing hands several times before Heinz was finally able to prevail and win. At one point, Heinz was down by 3 to 1 in chips but he was able to battle back.

The win earned Heinz $8,715,638.
5. Which player was named the WSOP Player of the Year even before play restarted in November?

Answer: Ben Lamb

Ben Lamb was the consensus favorite to win going into the final table even though he began the night in fifth place with 20,875,000 chips or 10.1% of the chips in play. He had an incredible run at the WSOP prior to the Main Event making four final tables and winning a bracelet.

After the WSOPE concluded with no one catching him for Player of the Year, he was given the award prior to play commencing at the final table. His run at this year's Main Event is all the more impressive considering he finished 13th in the 2009 Main Event. Lamb made it to Tuesday night and three handed play but lost a coin flip to Staszko on the first hand and was knocked out a few hands later.

He won $4,021,138 for finishing third.
6. Which player had the chance to break Joe Cada's record as the youngest Main Event winner and was the first player from the Ukraine to make the final table of the Main Event?

Answer: Anton Makiievskyi

Anton Makiievskyi was the fifth Ukrainian player to do well in the 2011 WSOP and the first to make the Main Event final table, the other four all won bracelets in preliminary events. Among these were Eugene Katchalov and Anton's close friend, Oleksii Kovalchuk. Anton almost missed the Main Event, he had Visa problems and missed all the preliminary events.

Although Anton ended day seven as the chipleader, he entered the final table in eighth place with 13,825,000 chips or 6.7% of the chips in play.

He never was able to really get anything going and went out in eighth place, winning $1,010,015.
7. Which player's father made the final table of the Main Event twice, in 1983 and 1991?

Answer: Eoghan O'Dea

Eoghan, pronounced Owen, O'Dea's father, Donnacha "The Don" O'Dea, finished sixth in the 1983 Main Event and ninth in the 1991 Main Event. He has also cashed four other times in the Main Event and won one bracelet in 1998 in Pot Limit Omaha. Eoghan came into the final table second in chips with 33,925,000 or 16.5% of the chips in play. Eoghan tangled with Pius Heinz in a critical hand early on and lost half his stack trying to bluff Heinz.

Heinz held pocket Queens and Eoghan held AQ. The flop was all small cards but suited. Eoghan made a hefty bet on the turn and Heinz tanked for a long time before pushing all in. Eoghan folded immediately.

The hand propelled Heinz into the chip lead. Later on, Eoghan made a great call against Ben Lamb when Lamb shoved holding Qd8d and O'Dea had Ac9d.

But luck was not on his side when Lamb flooped a flush draw. The river was the 8h giving Lamb the hand. Eoghan never recovered from the hand and was knocked out sixth a few hands later, just like his father in 1983. Unlike his father though, his payday was much bigger - $1,720,831.
8. Which player was the oldest player at the final table and the first player from Belize to make the final table of the Main Event?

Answer: Badih "Bob" Bounahra

Bob Bounahra was 49 years old and was originally from Lebanon but now resides in Belize where he runs a private poker room in the Princess Casino in Belize City. He entered the final table in sixth place with 19,700,000 chips or 9.6% of the chips in play.

His chip stack went up and down before he was knocked out on the 67th hand of the final table to finish in seventh place, winning $1,314,097.
9. Once the final table resumed on Sunday November 6, play continued until there were three players left. The final three would return on Tuesday night to play down to a winner. Who was knocked out fourth?

Answer: Matt Gianetti

Matt Gianetti had to play the short stack when play got down to ten handed but after a couple of double ups holding pocket Jacks, he entered the final table in third place with 24,750,000 chips or 12% of the chips in play. Many considered Matt's play to be some of the best of the final table but he got outdrawn by Ben Lamb late on Sunday and never recovered.

He was knocked out on hand 178 of the final table and finished fourth, winning $3,012,700. During the break between making the November Nine and resumption of play in November, Matt won the WPT Malta main event.
10. Which well-known and some would say 'magical' poker pro joined Lon McEachern and Norman Chad in the broadcasting booth for most of the final table, including all 119 hands of heads up play?

Answer: Antonio Esfandiari

Antonio Esfandiari, known as 'The Magician', did much of the commentary during the WSOP coverage in July and then again in November. He covered the early action on Sunday, with Phil Helmuth calling the late action, and then covered all of the action on Tuesday night. Antonio was responsible for guessing what the players had or at least what story they were telling with their betting.

His accuracy sometimes was uncanny.
