Answer: Kojak

Aristotelis Savalas was born in New York in 1922. He was nominated for an Oscar for his supporting role to Burt Lancaster in "Birdman of Alcatraz", and also appeared in "The Dirty Dozen", Bond film "On Her Majesty's Secret Service" (as arch villain Blofeld), "Kelly's Heroes" and "Escape to Athena".

He had two chart topping music hits - "If" in 1975, and "Some Broken Hearts Never Mend" in 1980.

He was godfather to his good friend John Aniston's daughter, Jennifer.

Telly Savalas' real screen success though was as lollipop sucking TV cop Theo Kojak, whose catchphrase was "Who loves ya baby?".

2. The Simon Park Orchestra had a surprise number one hit in the UK in 1972 with "Eye Level", the theme music for this cop show. Barry Foster starred in the title role - but which cop show was it?

Answer: Van der Valk

Barry Foster did have a supporting role in "The Sweeney", but it was as tough Dutch cop Piet Van der Valk that he made his name on British TV screens. He died at the age of 74 in 2001.

A number of films were made using the Van der Valk character, but introducing other actors such as Bryan Marshall and Frank Finlay in the title role.

3. Portly painter Eldin Bernecky in the TV series "Murphy Brown" and Hagrid from the "Harry Potter" films provide the links to this cop show - which Fitz in with a character played on both US and UK screens. But can you name the show?

Answer: Cracker

Robbie Coltrane played the part of Police Psychologist Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald in the British version of "Cracker", whilst the role of Gerry Fitzgerald in the American version was played by Robert Pastorelli.

In a poll in 2000, Robbie Coltrane was named as the sixth most famous Scot ever. He won't have been too concerned about the public naming him behind Robert the Bruce, William Wallace, Robert Burns and even Sean Connery, but being a less famous Scots person then the Loch Ness Monster may have caused him a slight concern. There is no evidence that he sought psychiatric help for this though!

4. One of the stars of "The Sweeney" was brought together with Neville from "Auf Wiedersehen Pet", mainly in the university city of dreaming spires. Whilst there, they acted out a TV Cop Show based on a series of books by Colin Dexter. What was the name of the programme?

Answer: Inspector Morse

The late John Thaw played with Dennis Waterman (Minder) in "The Sweeney" before teaming up with Kevin Whateley (Auf Wiedersehen Pet) in the "Inspector Morse" series. Two of Whateley's co-stars in "Auf Wiedersehen" were Jimmy Nail (Crocodile Shoes) and Timothy Spall (Shooting the Past).

Colin Dexter published 13 Inspector Morse novels, and an additional 20 stories were created for the TV. The last episode was first aired in 2000.

5. Felix Leiter, from the first James Bond movie, "Dr No" later became the lead actor in this island based cop show. Surf for some more clues, and you may get Danno to put them in a book for you. What was this cop show?

Answer: Hawaii Five-O

Jack Lord moved from being Sean Connery's confidante to being Steve McGarrett in the predominantly Honolulu based series. The show ran originally for 12 seasons, from 1968 to 1980, and an incredible 278 programmes were aired in total.

Most people remember the programme for its stirring theme tune (which has become the University of Honolulu's Fighting March), the crashing surf, and McGarrett's quip to his assistant to "Book 'em Danno" when another band of reprobates were bought to justice. Go on, tell me you're NOT humming that theme tune already...

6. Everton Football Club still run on to the theme tune of this Merseyside based TV Cop Show which first appeared on the BBC in 1962. The first episode featured a very young Judi Dench as a teenage delinquent, and other famous figures who appeared in the long running series include Brian Blessed, Stratford Johns and Colin Welland. What was the series?

Answer: Z Cars

The famous theme tune was actually based on a traditional north west folk song titled "Johnny Todd" dating back to the 19th Century. The series was based in "Newtown", a fictional suburb of Liverpool.

A number of spin offs were launched from the series, the most popular of these being "Softly, Softly", starring Johns and another Z Cars regular, Frank Windsor.

7. After being the murder suspect in Hitchcock's "Rear Window" he became Perry Mason before moving to a more sedentary role as the epynomynous hero of our Cop Show. What was the name of the series in which San Francisco's Chief of Detectives solved his crime from a wheelchair?

Answer: Ironside

Raymond Burr played the title role of Robert T Ironside which ran from 1967 to 1975. He was immortalized in popular culture when the Beastie Boys included the line "I ride around town like Raymond Burr" in the song "B-Boy Bouillabaisse".

Amongst the guest stars who appeared in "Ironside" were David Cassidy, Sharon Gless, Harrison Ford, Jodie Foster, William Shatner, Martin Sheen and Bruce Lee.

8. One of the original members of disco group Crown Heights Affair came together to form an undercover partnership with Melanie Griffith's twice ex-husband in this Cop Show, based in a southern American city. Both were to appear together in another cop show, "Nash Bridges" - but what was the name of the original series in which they appeared together?

Answer: Miami Vice

Philip Michael Thomas played the role of Ricardo Tubbs, and Don Johnson his partner, Sonny Crockett. The show ran for five series, aired originally from 1985 to 1989.

Given the two stars' musical backgrounds, it isn't surprising to note that amongst the guest stars in the series were Willie Nelson, Glenn Frey (Of The Eagles), Leonard Cohen, James Brown, Frankie Vallie and Frank Zappa.

The show also saw early appearances from future Box Office stars such as Julia Roberts, Liam Neeson, Bruce Willis, Ving Rhames and Ben Stiller.

9. Ilyena Vasilievna Mironov appeared nude on the cover of "Radio Times", and won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a royal character. But which popular British cop show, written by Lynda La Plante, do we associate this versatile actress with?

Helen Mirren appeared nude in "Calendar Girls", which was featured on the cover of British TV and Radio magazine "Radio Times". She won an Oscar for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in "The Queen" in 2006. She was also nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of another British Queen, Queen Charlotte, in "The Madness of King George".

We remember her for playing the lead role of Detective Jane Tennison in seven series' of "Prime Suspect". She has been nominated six times for an Emmy for this role, winning the award on two occasions.

Her grandfather was a Russian diplomat stranded in Britain at the time of the Russian Revolution.

10. The ex-wife of two well known rock musicians and the keeper of the Enterprise's Captain's log came together to star in this early 1980's cop show. Initially, you just need to name this show!

Answer: TJ Hooker

Heather Locklear has been married to Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee, and then to Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora. William Shatner is best known as Captain James Kirk in the "Star Trek" series.

27 episodes of TJ Hooker appeared between 1982 and 1985. Leonard Nimoy, Shatner's co-star on the Star Ship Enterprise, guested in and directed one of these episodes. The series also saw early appearances from Sharon Stone and Tori Spelling.
