Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The party arrives at Isengard, and meets Merry and Pippin. They argue about possible explanations for how the two Hobbits could've possibly survived the orc onslaught by the River Anduin. Which of these possibilities does NOT come up?

Answer: That the Hobbits are actually ghosts now.

They have a detailed discussion on the matter, when they could have just as easily ASKED the hobbits how they survived. Of course, players enjoy talking to one another, but not to the many "non-player characters" played by the Dungeon Master, who are generally regarded as second-class people and ignored whenever possible. Talking to "non-player characters" is apparently considered a chore!
2. Aragorn is apparently attracted to which of the following fantasy computer game creatures?

Answer: Spriggans from "Elder Scrolls: Oblivion".

The party members discuss this on their way to meet Treebeard. Aragorn thinks they are going to meet something similar to one of these Spriggans, which he considers "sexy", despite being reminded that they have leaves for hair and other unattractive features. To this, Aragorn responds that "they're ALL chicks. NAKED chicks. Leafy, naked tree chicks."

When they finally see what kind of "tree spirit" Treebeard really is, Aragorn seems... how to say this... disturbingly not as put-off about it as he should've been.
3. The party members have a parlay with Saruman at Isengard. How many people die during the talks?

Answer: 2

The party members are getting increasingly restless about their long and exceptionally boring campaign. Legolas opts to end their misery by taking advantage of the parlay to kill Saruman while he's least expecting it. Gandalf and Saruman barely get the chance to exchange a couple of sentences, when Legolas' first arrow misses Saruman and hits Grima instead. A long and awkward pause follows, as everyone else is befuddled by this unexpected turn of events. Legolas seizes this opportunity as well - to finish what he started.
4. At the tragic end of the Parlay with Saruman, Aragorn suggests that they should all share a moment of solemn silence for the dead, but not before... what?

Answer: They loot the bodies.

Loot is the single most important thing in the "DM of the Rings" story, for the sole reason that it's an extremely scarce commodity. The party members spend most (read: ALL) of their time searching and pining for loot, but all they ever find are low-quality weapons which are pointless to even pick up. Fortunately, a piece of loot has just fallen off the tower!
5. Legolas confuses which two wizards?

Answer: All three of them.

The ride to Isengard begins with Legolas being confused about who Saruman is - apparently he believes that Saruman and Gandalf are the same person. Later on, we find that ALL three party members are confused about the identity of Sauron, the main villain of the story. Legolas says he thought that "Sauron" was just Saruman's nickname. In truth - can you blame them? Saruman and Sauron, not a whole lot of difference there.

Too bad for them though - they thought killing Saruman was the end of the campaign! Blessed freedom was so close!
6. As they leave Isengard, where do the party members want to go FIRST?

Answer: West

They're definitely not interested in going back East to Edoras as they story dictates. They've got a thirst for some carefree sight-seeing, hopefully to be interrupted only by the occasional and highly-profitable random encounter.

Of course, there's in any other direction that's remotely relevant to the story, so the Dungeon Master comes up with the "impassable mountains" excuse for every direction except East. Adventure? Excitement? Not in this story, mister!
7. Aragorn decides to sell the magic scrying ball, the "Palantir", to the first person who'll buy it.

Answer: FALSE

After Pippin has his unfortunate accident with the Palantir, Aragorn figures that the ball is probably trapped. He reasons that because everyone knows it's trapped now, no one will ever buy it from him anyway.
8. The party members are quite happy that Gandalf has ridden off with Pippin.

Answer: TRUE

Happy is perhaps a gross understatement. Gandalf is easily the single most resented character in the entire campaign! He's always stealing their glory, swiping loot under their noses, and engaging in tedious and long-winded conversations with everything and everyone. Aragorn figures it was just a matter of time before he started "team-killing" them (I.E. "friendicide"). Good thing he's gone forever... OR IS HE?
9. The Dungeon Master forgot to give Aragorn an important item at the beginning of the campaign, and now has to make up for it using a really gratuitous and awkward scene. Which item is it?

Answer: His sword, Anduril

"DM of the Rings" pokes a lot of fun at the many ridiculous methods that Peter Jackson (director of the "Lord of the Rings" movies) used for explaining away some changes that he had to make to the original story - especially the ones that are particularly awkward to anyone who's ever read the book.

Realizing that he forgot to give Aragorn his UBER-POWERFUL MAGICAL SWORD, the Dungeon Master has Elrond suddenly appear at the camp of Dunharrow, deliver the sword, warn Aragorn to keep his hands off Arwen (literally - "Keep your hands off my daughter!"), and disappear; all in the course of about five seconds.

Both the scene in the webcomic and the one in the film put the term "Deus-Ex-Machina" to shame. But at least the comic INTENDS to do this.
10. There's a deleted scene between "DM of the Rings" chapters CIII and CIV. It shows one large frame of Aragorn's face, baring only his two front teeth. Who is he quoting?

Answer: Tim the Enchanter

In this amazing frame-capture from the film, Aragorn looks like Tim the Enchanter from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", where Tim relates the story of the Cave of Caerbannog and the terrible beast that guards it. Aragorn quotes the last phrase from Tim's story. This is definitely not the first reference to Monty Python, but unfortunately it is the last.
